my fanboy wet dream would be for it to be an epic BIG fun movie, steered by canon, but not tied down by it, with the fun and passion and guts and humor that made TOS great.

What I'm hoping at least, is to be entertained and maybe a little surprised.

A fun, epic, emotional movie that surprises me and isn't a full out reboot. I don't mind if it plays fast & loose with continuity (ala Enterprise or Superman Returns) so long as it takes place in generally the same universe that I've loved ever since I was in 4th grade.

A movie that breaths new life into the franchise the way Casino Royale breathed new life into James Bond. No time travel stories,no reset button,just a good story that shows what trek is all about.

Hey I can live with that

To illustrate. There are two episodes of ToS which made a formative impression on me about what Star Trek is: "Space Seed" & "Balance of Terror", in both these eps its almost incidental Star Trek is considered "science fiction" yet for the life of there are people who go around declaring Trek is the tv equivalent of "2001" and it strikes me as completely alien.

It all depends what you latch onto as to "what Star Trek means to you".
