We know what happens to Pike. No one ever questioned it before. The fact that we are now more familiar with his personality and like him makes this harder to accept -- not to mention the fact that he knows what is coming! I think that's quite a brilliant move on the part of the writers. It adds new dimension to why Pike so quickly sacrificed himself. Not only did he do it out of duty to the cadets, but he knew he had to to preserve the timeline.
In fact, I would go as far as to say that Spock has seen his own future, thanks to the mind meld with the Red Angel. He goes into that warp core knowing that he will save the Enterprise and defeat Khan. That sort of takes the heroism out of it, but who is Spock to argue with destiny?
I also note there's a parallel with STiD. After having nuSpock tell him the way events went down with Khan in the Prime timeline, he has to listen to a dying Kirk tell him "It's what you would have done." Spock seems to get mind-fucked about his destiny in any universe!

The training accident adds tragedy. It's one case where canon adds drama to the story. You feel for Pike. He doesn't get a "Happily Ever After" ending, because Talos is an illusion. If he ever leaves, the illusion is gone.
And, if nothing else, Season 2 has made both Pike and "The Menagerie" mean a lot more to me than it did before. I feel like I know Pike a lot better now. I knew Pike before, but that was only in the sense that I know Millard Fillmore used to be a President.
What happens after Pike is on Talos IV... I'm open to whatever they decide to do.
On a related note: I'm glad they ignored The Death Penalty. I always thought it was stupid. We can throw that in the dustbin next to "I just can't get used to having a woman on the bridge."
And, if nothing else, Season 2 has made both Pike and "The Menagerie" mean a lot more to me than it did before. I feel like I know Pike a lot better now. I knew Pike before, but that was only in the sense that I know Millard Fillmore used to be a President.

The chair is temporary... sort of. He goes back to Talos and lives there with Vina and a world of fantasies. So it's not ALL bad. Even if it's ultimately fake and probably as unfulfilling as the Nexus.

I agree. "The Menagerie " has always been one of my favorite/most fascinating episodes in the whole franchise.
DSC Season 2 in general (and specifically "If Memory Serves" and "Valley of Shadows") have really made the whole character arc an amazing saga. They compliment each other perfectly.
I don't know. The Nexus was immortality combined with fantasy driven by your own desires.
There's no immortality with the Talosians, and he is with Vina, who is a real person. And they don't create the fantasy on their own.
I think it's probably a happier existence than the Nexus. Similar, admittedly, but still better.
Anson Mount Pike is so good, I rather he had his HEA, however the way his fate was presented to him made for good drama. Kelvin Pike had a better life if not for Nero and Khan, looks like he never went to Talos or Borath.
Maybe not immortality, but who knows how long Pike could live in their care?
Its still a bit of suspension of disbelief for me that they could not fix Vina or even Pike eventually.
Airiam herself brings up so many new questions.

True, but the big knock on the nexus was that literal immortality meant every experience was ultimately meaningless because life itself was no longer precious. They might live a long life on Talos, but they won't live for eternity.
I'd guess if you remove this element (immortality), and replace it with the gratitude of being able to live unaffected by your horrible affections, life could still be challenging and enjoyable, even though it's ultimately an illusion.
And, he gets to spend that time with someone he cares about who is similarly afflicted.
Not ideal...but ultimately not too bad either, as far as "dramatic fates" go.
I was always under the impression that the damage to Pike included some kind of brain damage that prevented modern technology from interfacing effectively with his brain.
I'm not sure the Nexus was all it was pumped up to be. I remember the line that Kirk, from his perspective, had just gotten there. Even though he beat Picard there by eighty years.
Perhaps or after seeing what happened to Ariam, being taken over by advanced A.I and endangering her shipmates, St Pike would rather be in the chair and refused the bionic parts. Its the sort of sacrificial thing he would do.
