What do you think the Enterprise interiors will look like?

I thought those costumes worked great for DS9.

They were a lot more military-looking than the prior costumes.

They didn't look anything like military uniforms, but they did look a lot like tacky jogging outfits.

I don't think Trek uniforms need to look like today's military uniforms. They should look more like disco outfits.

Gold Lame' and rhinestones? Platform booties? Rank insignia on gold chains? Men have pointed sideburns down to their throats, and also pointed-shaved chest hair visible through the buttoned-down-to-the-navel uniform tunics? COOOL...

You had me nodding my head in agreement until you got to the pointed-shaved chest hair...

The best way to answer the question is to think about what Abrams and the writers have said so far about the film.

The whole idea, according to them, is to make more people like Star Trek, since the last five or six Trek movies were aimed at people who already knew what was going on.

So let's say, your a non-believer, and your Treker friend talks you into going to the movie with him. What would it take for the movie to suck YOU in?

So the best way to answer the question, to me, is to look at what would appeal to the average person, and still be very familiar to current fans.

Now, I speculate. The actual design will probably be similar; for instance, NCC-1701 hallways were the widest of any Trek ship. That may not change, but the color schemes are probably going to be different.

In the mid-to-late sixties strong colors like red, gold and green were popular, along with sharp edges and bulky props. This is evident in doors, tools, background lighting etc.

Nowdays, the average person associates futuristic with sleekness, rounded edges and gloss finishes and softer colors.

Take the IPhone for instance, it's probable that a new communicator design will still have a golden top, but the matte black backing would be replaced with a gloss finish that would closely resemble the IPhone. Also, instead of a swirling white screen inside surrounded by knobs, it will most likely be a touch screen, also like an IPhone.

Of course, I may be totally wrong. They may reproduce the sets exactly and just use the extra budget to add detail to what we already have, such as moving screens on the bridge, better room acoustics, flashing panels and so forth, but I happen to believe that the production team has a bigger imagination than that. The best thing for the team to do is to get into the MENTALITY of the original crew.

New people will NOT watch the 60's era stuff. I've tried, on many occasions to do so. A new NCC-1701 is needed, with new interiors & modern uniforms. I love original trek, but it will BOMB BIG TIME at the box office, save for die-hard trekkers.

I agree. The modern viewer demands more attention to detail.

Since the ships shape and interior/exterior configuration are sacred, I imagine most of the 'newness' will be the added detail and a modernization of color schemes and whatnot.

As for the uniforms. The original uniforms were probably done with a very limited budget in mind so I think the new uniforms will be just an extension of the original look.

I expect to see the colored shirts, black pants and matching boots, it's the only way to respect continuity (and I like that uniform the best, personally; it holds the boys in place).

I'm sorry, but BALONEY.

It's only the really young and naive people who think that there's really a significant different between "modern viewers" and "everybody else."

People who say that sort of thing are also the ones who think that back in the 1940 nobody had discovered sex yet.

I love hearing kids these days talking about how "naive" things were when I was growing up. While I see things today and just see the exact same things, except with different examples of "stupid dressing styles" and with a few relatively minor new "toys" (MP3 players and cell phones, mainly).

Human nature is NOT different for "modern audiences" as opposed to "a couple of decades ago audiences."

The only REAL point there is that "audiences today are more easily distracted by shiney objects." ;)

The movie is VAPORWARE at this point. Having said that, every time I try to get someone to watch the 60's version, they start laughing. For older people, the cardboard boxes with blinking lights gets them every time. For younger people, it's the uniforms.

If Trek really is going to be revamped, it needs to be modern, else the only people you will get are die hard fans.

PERIOD.

Re: What do you think the Enterprise interiors will look lik

The movie is not vaporware. It's in pre-production right now. They *are* working on it. The script is complete. All they have to do now basically is cast, shoot, and wrap.

Re: What do you think the Enterprise interiors will look lik

^ At this point i'm willing to bet that the sets have been designed and bulit already, props ditto, but no uniforms made as you have to have the actors measurments FIRST before making any coustumes, however they have been designed by this point at least as well.

Filming starts in FALL, we're half-way through SUMMER, Paramount has to have a lot of things done BEFORE they start filming, no longer are they in pre-pre-production mode like they were in SPRING this is pre-production.

Anyone who knows anything about how films are made should know this stuff and if they don't well, a few of us can educate the rest of you you know, just ask us.

You would be VERY safe to say that the carpentry for the major sets is completed, but you can also safely assume that the guys from the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) are busy crawling all over the sets running wiring, etc, and that the paint is still sitting in cans stacked up along the northern wall of the soundstage... ;)

Also, realize that with limited numbers of stages to work on, and with this film including a fairly large number of settings, many sets will be built, filmed on, then immediately struck... and new sets will be built on the same stage.

It's not unreasonable to assume that the hero-ship interior sets will be torn down and stored, of course. But I feel confident in saying that we will see multiple ships, and many settings unrelated to ships. In fact, I'd be fairly surprised to see more than a very small "Constitution-class-like" set space... perhaps a bridge back-wall, a corridor or two, maybe sickbay...

But it's not TOO long before set photos will start to become available... we'll see, then. ;)

Re: What do you think the Enterprise interiors will look lik

^ See, some of us do have a idea how this all works ;)

Agreed on all accounts.

* Can't wait to have a sneek peak at the sets online *

actually carpentry does not start until the beginning of August but I do beleive the sets are mostly designed. We had reported it would start this month but that was when they were planning to shoot in October, now they are going to start in November

i expect more changes on the interiors than the exteriors

Re: What do you think the Enterprise interiors will look lik

^ Thanks PTM, so for the most part every thing else is on course, just a month behind, okay.

Just as long as this doesn't end up being a 'Rushed Job' like TMP, I'd hate to have to wait 20 years for it to be 'Finished' like TMP was.

* Once was enough for this fan, thankyouverymuch *

Re: What do you think the Enterprise interiors will look lik

well they still have plenty of time...they start shooting over 13 months ahead of release....and they have over 3 months to build the sets (maybe longer if they start with the location shooting which is what they did on MI3 and how Spielburg is shooting Indy 4). Also looking at Indy 4 they didnt start the shoot until 11 months before release. So Trek still has padding. Once they move the release from summer to winter things got a lot more relaxed
