What do you think of the Terminator movies?

...
Maybe because it tied things up to tightly, and pretty much removed all wiggle room for more sequels.

I don't see what it would change. It's time travel, which means that timelines can be changed. After all, isn't that what they did?

Either John believes Judgment Day is definitely, 100% prevented, and thus his work in that respect is done, or he spends his whole life off the grid/hiding. Anything else, including the abominable deleted ending where he's a US Senator, would be nonsensical.

Oh I have never seen that it's not on the version of the movie I purchased.

Wow, I've never seen that ending before. I quite like it.

Maybe they should refilm the scene with how Linda Hamilton actually looks like now, which is far better than that make-up.

Well crap, I re-read my issue of Cinefex No. 47, dated August 1991, in order to see if it mentioned anything about why the ending was changed and nothing.

The magazine mentions the deleted scene featuring Michael Biehn, the reprogramming the Terminator scene, and more of the T-1000 malfunctioning, but not the ending.

The magazine does say that the final edit of the film was delivered only the day before its world premiere (its world premiere was July 1, 1991; that means the final cut was done June 30, 1991); so maybe the future ending was one of the last scenes Cameron cut from the film.

The magazine article ends on this quote from James Cameron - 'Terminator 2 does it for me. Not only does this story change the future, it unmakes the future that made both films possible - so it's a closed loop. As far as I'm concerned, Terminator 2 answers all the questions. But you can make a long list of filmmakers who have said: 'No, this is it. This is all I have to say on the subject'. And then, sheepishly, five years later they're skulking about working on another sequel'.

Edit - I just realized - if this quote was taken before the world premiere (which it probably was, considering the lead time a magazine would need in order to reach newsstands) then Cameron's quote is about the deleted future scene, and it really was a last minute decision to go with the 'unknown future' in order to leave room for a sequel.

I like the franchise a lot more than others seem to, but that’s also how I feel about the Alien movies....so there is that.

T2 10/10
The Terminator 9.75/19
T3 7.5/10
Dark Fate 7/10
Salvation 6/10
Genisys 3/10

IIRC, Cameron does commentary for the deleted ending, either on its own, or as part of the regular commentary track. It wasn't about leaving room for sequels; it was about the tonal whiplash it would have produced, and how it would have distracted from the emotional climax of Uncle Bob's self-sacrifice.

And it wasn't the last time he shot an ending of mind-boggling awfulness, either:

Guaranteed, keeping that ending would have lost the movie its Best Picture win.

... And now, for old time's sake, my Terminator Time Chart, which justifies T3's existence via its "the military originally created Skynet" theory:

Aging can be accelerated by excessive stress... Perhaps the actress lived a happier life than her character...
I do have to wonder about the life lived by this particular timelines version of Sarah Connor. She was still wanted for horrendous crimes, now she's sitting in a public park visiting with her son the senator. Did she fake her death? Does she have a new identity? Did she do time? Is she in hiding? Are these visits in the park the only place where she can actually visit her grandkids while her son the senator stands at a distance not acknowledging her because if it came out that the Senator's mother was believed to be a psychotic killer and wanted by the law it would ruin his career? @Mr. Laser Beam -- did the novelization* answer any of these questions?

*To the OP-- sorry for the brief diversion into the novel verse. I hope it doesn't balloon into massive thread drift.

About the ending: The guy's invested everything he has in this venture but now he's happy because it was all for nothing...

I wonder how Cameron would feel if he was told that he has to sleep at the local homeless shelter from now on...

What an ass!!!!

When it comes to the various Terminator films, my quick thoughts:

Terminator - Absolute trash. Arnold is fine and gets a few good scenes as the Terminator, but I actively loathe Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese in this film and want The Terminator to kill them. I consider this the worst film in the series.

Terminator 2 - Best film in the franchise. Arnold is great, but this time around Sarah Connor is also really good, and this is also one of the few moviues that has a teenage character who is pretty good instead of being annoying. The story of the film is also great, the T-2000 is really cool, and the action still holds up very well. I genuinely enjoy this movie.

Terminator 3 - Unlike a lot of people I don't hate this movie. Its very flawed, and the actor playing John isn't great, but overall I think its an ok movie, with decent action and some good Terminator scenes.

Terminator Salvation - Its better then the original film, but still painfully mediocre and with a very stupid story. Not having Arnold really hurts the film since there is no one with any real presense or charisma to take his spot, leading to the movie being fairly dull in the character department.

Terminator Genisys - Better then Salvation, but admittedly much stupider. Its great to have Arnold back, but Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke are horrible actors, even worse then Sam Worthington in Salvation. What makes this movie better then Salvation is Arnold and just how batshit insane parts of the movie are, which make it much more interesting but still not a "good" movie.

Terminator Dark Fate: I still haven't watched this movie, and I don't feel like I've missed anything.

So, overall I'd say T2, T3 and Genisys are worth watching from this franchise, but T2 is the only actual good movie, although its really great so its existence justifies the entire franchise.,

....,

I just realized she's also the one who plays the queen of blond hair and fire in Games Of Throne, isn't she?

Yeah, she's no oscar material...
