What do you think of the new Sherlock Holmes?

It looks like it could be fun but i'm laughing at the comparison to Last Action Hero's Arnold-action-packed "Hamlet"... that's a very spot-on comparison. It looked like someone was doing a parody of Sherlock Holmes, but in a modern action style *explosion goes off behind Stone_Cold_Sisko*

It looks just like nu Trek. If they had changed the names and made up a new Steampunkish Victorian adventurer, it might be entertaining-- but it's not Sherlock Holmes.

i must admit, more recent cuts of the trailer seem more and more like what i'd expect from a holmes film.

I have read all of Doyle's Holmes stories, many of the non -Doyle ones, and even all of Derleth's Holmesian Solar Pons stories. I've seen many of the movie and TV versions of Holmes, as well.

I'll give this one a chance; I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I dunno, from the trailer we see someone that fairly closely resembles the literary Holmes. As a fan who's read all the stories, this movie appears to be a faithful, but modern, take on the character.

Reading the Wikipedia description of the movie, it sounds like it is going to be equal parts 're-imagining' and equal parts homage to Doyle's existing works and characters. For my part, I think it looks like it's going to be fun to see, and would see it even if I didn't have a cursory knowledge of the character (which, thankfully, I do).

BTW, for anyone who's skeptical of the film, I'd strongly suggest reading the Wiki article, which you can find here.

Well, perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised, but terms like "modern" and "contemporary," and comparisons to Batman Begins don't really belong in a description of Sherlock Holmes. :rommie:

It doesn't look anything like Batman Begins.

Iron Man fits better: Robert Downey Jr. being cool, making jokes, and going through the motions of the formulaic plot. Granted, this film looks like it'll be more fun than Iron Man, as it's a period piece and all, but time will tell.

WATSON: "Where were the other drugs going?"
THUG: "I never knew! I swear to God!"
WATSON: "Swear to *me*!"

HOLMES: "It's not who I am underneath, but what I *do* that defines me."

Not impressed with the trailer. I got the same vibe I felt when I watched the trailer for "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and "Wild Wild West" It seemed too slick. Too '90s. Too Hollywood.

Slick would not be the term I'd use to describe LXG and Wild Wild West. LXG I'd call gaudy. Slick would be any Michael Bay movie that's not Bad Boys II or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
