What Do You Think About SETI@home?

Had a bad experience after it crashed my powerbook. I found our that my powerbook had bad firmware installed. Still, I'm a little iffy about it.

Reminds me of something I read once - the shortest sci fi short story ever written. It was a report card filed about Earth by an alien race. The whole story was one letter:

F.

Earth:

Harmless.
Oh come on, you know that after much consideration, they're updating the entry on Earth!

Mostly harmless.

But did Ford ever get to transmit that addendum? ;)

I ran the original SETI@Home before they opened it up as BOINC. Actually got a candidate signal, but it was not apparent in two reobservations. Oh well. :)

I can't speak to the BOINC version of SETI@Home, but the original had negligent impact on my PC since it ran as a screensaver.

Boinc is fine. If anything, it's better.

I'm somewhat torn between running Folding@home on my pc, and finding a cure to all mankind's ills, and turning it off while not in use, thereby preventing global warming.

I think there's plenty of intelligent life in the universe...they just think that Earth is too backwards and primitive and hence not worth contacting. :(

I mean, if you were a super advanced intelligent alien race, would *you* want to talk to us?

Truthfully? No. I'd forbid others of my species to even visit earth, and make a quarantine area around the whole sector.

Oh come off it. We're not that bad.

Of course, *we* would say that...

We still have war. We fight amongst ourselves. There's still crime, poverty, terrorism. Not exactly things to be proud of.

And there's love and art and brotherhood and science and progress.

My glass is half full. You can hide in the closet when ET comes, if you want.

For all we know so does ET.

I used to run it on my PC many years ago. I love the premise but you know what? As a screen saver it sucks. There are too many static "LCARS"-style graphics that never change, causing those portions of the screen to burn into the phosphors permanently. The whole point of a screen saver is to SAVE the SCREEN - not destroy it. They may have changed it since - I guess 2001 was when I last used it - never bothered to try it later.

I pray the aliens would be very benevolent and highly intelligent beings because if the aliens are anything like we are i'd be absolutely shitting myself.
