What Do You Plan to Read in 2011?

JD

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Since we have a what did you read, and a what are you reading thread, I thought it might be fun to do a what do you plan on reading in the future thread.
Here's mind:
Trek: Pretty much all of this year's unless they get horrid reviews and a whole ton of oldies on my nook, it's way to many to list here.
Non-Trek:
I plan on continuing on with the Dresden Files and True Blood/Southern Vampire series from the 4th books in the series. I also plan on starting The Otherworld, Mercy Thompson, and Rachel Morgan/The Hollows series.
I also plan on making up for never reading the classics in school ( I don't know how, but other than 1984 [which I hated], and some Shakespear for both English and Drama classes I've never read any of the classics) by reading a whole ton including War of the Worlds, Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Peter Pan, Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Huck Finn, Jungle Books, Beowulf, Count of Monte Christo, Les Mes, and a whole bunch of others.
Like I mentioned in another thread, I'm going to be checking out PK Dick and HP Lovecraft.
I'm hoping to also check out the Maximum Ride and Percy Jackson YA series.
I like alot of historical movies and TV shows, so I decided to try out historical novels, with Roma and The Pillars of the Earth as my first two. I also like foreign movies, so I've decided to check out books either written in or focusing on characters in other countries, so I've got Empress Orchid by Anchee Min, which follows the first half of the life of the last Empress of China , it's followed by a sequel The Last Empress which I'll probably read if I like it. I also added the Japanese novel, The Windup Bird Chronicle/ねじまき鳥クロニクル by Hiruji Murakami (translated by Jay Rubin) which follows a man as he searches for first a missing cat, and then his wife. Along the way he encounters all sorts of weird and crazy characters. The Septembers of Shiraz by Dalia Sofer, about an Jewish Iranian family during the Iranian Revolution. The Turkish novel Snow by Nobel Prize for Literature winner Orhan Parmuk, and the Albanian novel The Accident, which follows the events surrounding a fatal car accident that killed two people during the war in the Balkans.

Trek:
-The latter two Typhon Pact books, of course.
- Watching the Clock and Children of the Storm.
- I want to catch up with the Titan books (I've read #1, #3, and Seize the Fire.)
- The Terok Nor trilogy is of deep interest.
- I'd love to start the Vanguard series but am cautious about doing so given the possibility I won't be able to access Reap the Whirlwind.
- Exploring the Lost Era books and maybe finishing off the Stargazer novels. I've read three, own four, can't find one, and don't have one.

Non-Trek:
- Bernard Cornwell, Bernard Cornwell, Bernard Cornwell. I discovered him this year and have become a fan. He writes historical fiction, and I'm just wild about his medieval books.
- I'd like to continue in and finish the Story of Civilization series by Will Durant, and possibly start Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
- I want to finish Isaac Asimov's Empire series, and maybe knock off The Gods Themselves and The End of Eternity, too.
- And there are some assorted books I bought last year but haven't yet read, like: Marcus Aurelius: A Life, Epicures: Essential Teachings and Fragments, A People's History of the World, and The Age of Absurdity: How Modern Life Makes It So Hard to be Happy.

Depending on time and moeney of course:

Pretty much all new Trek as fast as I can get them, there is not a single one that doesn't sound interesting for me.
Trek-Backlist: The last two Corps of Engineers-Omnibusses, and all unread Books from Diane Duane, Peter David and Greg Cox, after that the Captain's Table-Omnibus.

Non Trek: I'm plannng on finally finishing some ongoing Series I started over the years and never finished. For example Takeshi Kovacs from Richard Morgan, Age of Unreason from Greg Keyes, Rama from Arthur C. Clarke. If time permits, one or two Neal Stephenson and/or William Gibson, both not exactly "light and easy" books, but certainly worth the amount of time and work their books require.
And I'm also planing to continue my efforts to broaden my reading experiences with more non-SF-Books, so there will certainly be some Thrillers, some historical stuff and a bunch of titles from our complete Ken Follet-collection.

The only trek novels I am planning to read are:
The Romulan War: In Shariel's Jaws
Cast No Shadow
Children Of the Storm
Declassified
DTI: Watching the Clock
The Typhon Pact: Rough Beasts of Empire
The Typhon Pact: Paths of Disharmony

I know I will be getting a lot of the Trek books from this year's output, but I doubt I'll get to read them all. Hopefully, I'll get through some of them.

What I do plan to get to this year:
- Typhon Pact books
- Vanguard from this year
- Myriad Universe 3
- Titan: Precipice
- The last 3 DS9 books
- Vulcan's Soul triology

Non-Trek
- The Lucifer Box books by Mark Gatiss
- Mao's Last Dancer by Li Cunxin (I've skimmed most of the book, and I've watched the movie, just need to prepare myself to read the book properly)
- Life on Air by David Attenborough
- Harry Potter #6, which is the only one I haven't read properly yet, I think.
- Finish re-reading all of the Sherlock Holmes stories before Sherlock's second series.

I think if I get through half of that list, I'll be doing very well.

Trek related: Children of the Storm and Rise Like Lions(which based on its publishing date should be out right at the tail end of 2011). Gonna wait on reviews for Watching the Clock.

Star Trek

  • The Left Hand of Destiny Book Two
  • Articles of the Federation
  • Deep Space Nine
    • Worlds of DS9, one through three; Warpath; Fearful Symmetry; The Soul Key; The Never-Ending Sacrifice
  • Destiny; A Singular Destiny
  • The Next Generation: Losing the Peace
  • Voyager: Full Circle & Unworthy
  • Titan: Over a Torrent Sea & Synthesis
  • Typhon Pact, one through four
  • Vanguard, one through five
  • New releases, assuming I get through everything already listed. Also have a long list of other Trek books that I'd like to get caught up on, but those for the most part will probably wait until I've finished this list.
Non-Trek

  • Gotham Central, hardcovers one through three
  • Heinlein's The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress
  • Miéville's The City & The City
  • Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan's The Fall, book two of The Strain Trilogy
  • The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
  • Woodward's Obama's Wars
  • Various other fiction & non-fiction books that I'll probably never get around to, thanks to the spring & fall semesters. I'll be pretty damn happy if I can get through these two lists, though.

Non-Trek:
- Bernard Cornwell, Bernard Cornwell, Bernard Cornwell. I discovered him this year and have become a fan. He writes historical fiction, and I'm just wild about his medieval books.

One of my work colleagues introduced his books to me back in 1990 or so. I mostly read his Sharpe books but like the other stuff too.

As for myself it mostly seems to be SF so far:-

Honorverse
Mission of Honor
Crown of Slaves
Torch of Freedom

A Galaxy Unknown Series by Thomas DePrima
Valor at Vauzlee
Clones of Mawcett
Trader Vyx
Milor!

John Birmingham - Without Warning

H G Wells - War of the Worlds

Margaret Wander Bonanno - Star Trek: Unspoken Truth

Michael A Martin & Andy Mangels - Star Trek: Forged in Fire.

There will also be the Typhon Pact novels that are to be released this year. Besides those, I'll have to see what looks interesting.

On top of the hundreds of comics and graphic novels I'll roll through, I plan on checking out as much treklit as possible. Typhon Pact - Path of Disharmony, The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor’s Wing (MMPB reprint), Indistinguishable from Magic, DTI:Watching the Clock, Voyager: Children of the Storm, Vanguard: Declassified, and Cast No Shadow... out of the new stuff.

I'd also like to continue the Vanguard series (before I read Declassified), the MMPB version of David Mack's Sorrows of Empire, the few MyrU stories I haven't read and a re-read of the Gorkon books :klingon:

Everybody else has left out that one - I guess that's me fucked as far as being successful enough to return goes...

Everybody else has left out that one - I guess that's me fucked as far as being successful enough to return goes...
For what it's worth, that one is in my mind under the "new releases" section of my Trek to-read list. I just have to get through the backlog before I start bothering to list out the specific new releases I'm interested in.

Here's what catches my interest for Treklit in 2011. Can't guarantee I will read them all, but there's a strong possibility:

Typhon Pact: Seize the Fire (started reading this yesterday)
Typhon Pact: Rough Beasts of Empire
Typhon Pact: Paths of Disharmony
TNG: Indistinguishable From Magic
VOY: Children of the Storm
DTI: Watching the Clock

I'll continue to read the Dresden Files (waiting for Changes and Side Jobs to be published in paperback). Also waiting for The Fall (Book Two in the Strain trilogy) to be released in paperback as well.

Honestly not sure what else I'll be reading this year. I may go back and re-read some older books that I remember enjoying a long time ago (to see if they still hold up). I've also got a few books that were given to me and have been sitting on the shelf for a long time, but I just never got around to reading them.

In terms of Trek, I have the next two Typhon Pact books to read, and have the second Romulan War book on order.

Outside of Trek, I have the next Horus Heresy book on order, Age of Darkness, though disappointed that that is only a collection of short stories as I didnt really like the last short story collection that much and that it seems to be the only Horus Heresy book out this year, with Deliverance Lost stating a January 2012 release on amazon.

Beyond that I shall see what I see in the shops and online. Usually if the cover looks good I'll buy it. not the best way to pick books but meh...
