What Do You Like / Not Like About Chris Pine?

Although he does have a passing resemblence to William Shatner, he looks like a slightly altered clone of James Marsden or, ironically, Jeffrey Hunter.

The only real thing I don't like about Chris Pine are his small squinting blue eyes. The blue however can be corrected brown and the major thing I actually like about Chris Pine is that his face, the overall shape and dimensions, are spot-on with a young Shatner.

There are other things I don't like about Pine as Kirk, but they are neither here nor there. This thread deals mostly with physical appearance.

I'm being totally serious. Until people started grousing about Pine, I'd never even known Shatner had hazel eyes. And that's just going on a couple posts I've read in here.

Just doesn't seem to matter. What DOES matter is performance, and whether he can he sell Kirk or not. Jury's still out on that, but why not be optomistic?

Shatner was much more classically handsome at that age than Pine, who looks rather like the generic, bulky, ex-high-school-athlete type that Hollywood has been promoting since Tom Cruise. Shatner had a slightly broader face and more manly forehead, and for lack of a better term, a more relaxed quality about him. The photos I've seen of Pine have the expression of someone about to rush off to blast his quads. The fact that Pine's beady blue eyes make him look rather psycho or simply possessed don't help much, but I'm sure things will work out better when he actually gets before the cameras.

I dont like the fact that he's not MATT DAMON!
I really liked the first few choices for casting but Sulu,Kirk,Bones,scotty. I really dont have any faith in any of them. When I See the guy playing bones all I can see is him in some action movie where he's a badass. Bones is not a badass. Sulu...Sulu goes to whitecastle. Pegg/Scotty, All i see for him is him jumping over 3-4 fences. Kirk, He looks too young.

All of which were the product of the old regime, and almost none of them will be working on this film. At the very least, we're going to get all-new franchise-crippling mistakes.

As for Pine, I'm not currently familiar with his work, but I'll be optimistic until I have reason not to be. He may be a lame actor and/or miscast, but he'd have to be a complete idiot not to realize that this role could swallow his career whole, so I'm confident that he'll give Kirk as much passion, commitment, and eyebrow as he can muster.

No, in all seriousness though, he is a great-looking young actor -- not unlike one William Shatner once upon a time. At the end of the day, I think only one thing matters, and it's not necessarilly that he looks identical to Shatner/Kirk or acts like Shatner -- it's that he simply plays a good James T. Kirk. Pine bears a fine enough resemblance to Kirk and if he can do the role justice, I'll be very satisfied.

To echo the thoughts of another poster, Pine must know that this is the opportunity of a lifetime; heck, he turned down the chance to star alongside George Clooney. I think he's quite aware that this role could be what makes him the next Brad Pitt. Or the next Casper Van Dien. He'll treat the role accordingly.

^ Actually Clooney just dropped out of that movie too, so it looks like Pine DEFINITELY made the right call.

As for Pine compared to a young Shatner, the only difference I see is that Shatner was in his mid-30s when he started Trek. The reason he looks slightly more experienced and mature is because he was OLDER. It's the normal process all actors (and guys in general) go through.

When Pine is 35 he'll probably be an even better Kirk.
