What do you do on the ISS when you are free?

Didn't know they actually had free time up there...I always assumed that when they weren't sleeping, eating or exercising, they were always at work.

Um..........OK. Your point?

I was just blown away that they had that many movies to choose from..... Probably on a hard drive as I doubt they'd have space for physical disks so does that mean we can store movies that we buy on our hard drives at home in domestic citizen land?

I can't imagine a studio would deny a request from NASA to provide a movie for its astronauts. Just the chance of possible publicity of an astronaut watching their film or goodwill press saying they contribute to the space program would be worth it.

Good to know our tax money goes to fulfilling freedom of information requests for silly articles.

They realised back on Gemini 7, and then later Skylab, that eat-work-sleep doesn't work long-term (a few hours off more than pays off in the increased on-duty work rate). There's always a need for downtime, so let the crew have some distractions. On Skylab it was books, now movies.

All work and no play makes a dull day! Yep, gotta keep the mind sharp somehow. Chris Hadfield was talking about this a bit when I saw him in October. I think the list keeps getting bigger each time someone comes aboard.

Even in 2016 they aren't watching movies from the 50s though.

Actually, they are. Just look at the playlist again and you'll see 2 from the 1950's and 1 from the 1940's in just those shows starting with "A".

What I think is hilarious is they only have season 1 of Arrow. :cardie:

The list also shows what nerds the astronauts are when you see not only the amount of Scifi on the list but that there are eight seasons of The Big Bang Theory.

I wonder if the Russian Cosmonauts take umbrage at the 1960's classic, "The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!" :guffaw:

Glancing around, I caught at least one film from the '30s--Duck Soup.

And at least one from the '50s that doesn't start with "A"--Forbidden Planet.

You've seen Chris Hadfield?

I'm jealous. :(

They have to wait until Netflix for Astronauts is updated.. ;)

In reality though, I think the list only ever gets updated whenever a new astronaut comes aboard, but I don't know what the criteria is. Watching Lost in Space while on the ISS must be fun times, and there must be times where it actually feels surreal.

Yeah, saw him give a talk in October. I participated in a Space Week event he was there for, and that same evening was the talk he gave. There was also a meet & greet where I got to meet him and get my picture taken with him. Was really cool :)

If you ever get the chance to go and hear him speak, take advantage of it. He's a wonderful speaker that inspires.

Since they are exhibiting movies in the workplace, do they have to purchase some kind of license for each movie, or what?

They're in space. Copyright what's that? :D

But seriously I have no idea I'd figure they would have some deal for that.
