What do you do for a living?

I am a visual effects artist, more specifically a vfx compositor, specializing in a piece of software called Nuke. I do mainly feature film work, but I also do commercial stuff from time to time. In a nutshell, it is my job to combine the various elements of a vfx shot, the actual footage, the CG elements, matte paintings, etc, into a final unified shot, that, if done correctly, should not be able to discerned a a VFX shot. This includes matching the plate lighting, lens distortion, film grain, or video noise, color, and generating mattes from a green screen.

I am a freelance artist, which means I bounce from studio to studio on the east coast. However I am usually at a small studio in Philadelphia, which is run by some former artists and supervisors from Digital Domain. I've only done it for two years professionally, but they've been fantastic teachers, and are true experts in their field. I've been lucky enough to work on Let Me In, I am Number Four, Safe, Tower Heist, the upcoming Kevin James film Here Comes the Boom, and most recently Chernobyl Diaries.

that sounds cool! But isn't working freelance rather risky? A friend of mine does practically the same you do, only with sounds. He's constantly looking for a job but only gets offers for unpayed internships which is kinda ridiculous for someone in his 50s and with his job experience.

Ironically, I know quite a few musicians who also work in pizza shops around Albuquerque.

I too worked at a pizza shop.. It was a very traditional "old school" place that specialized in Sicilian pies... I learned a lot about how to make a "real" pizza that has actually translated into being able to make kick ass pizza at home.

Also, during a short stint at Dominoe's a few years later, I showed the gang there how to make a real pan-pizza... Too bad we couldn't sell them that way...

Work in a Warehouse as a Receiver/Driver for the Department of National Defense at CFB Esquimalt. mostly receiving Contract stuff from all over the world.
and writing e-mails request to Ottawa asking them for the contract so I can actually get the stuff received and make sure its ok, after the technical inspectors verify it acording to the contract. especially the Sub stuff and shelf life material.

There are days when you feel like this in those dealings.

(And I can be as guilty my self).

Pretty much. Ironically, due to the way I've gone about learning the trade over 25 years, I probably have stronger skill set than most people ten years in the business.
