I always called them "check-holders," or "covers."

One local restaurant uses old paperbacks as the check-holders. While I was waiting for them to pick up my credit card, I got to thumb through a very battered copy of "War of the Worlds."

Check holders is what we called them, if we gave them a name at all.

The idea of using old paperbacks is super cool. I love it.
