what do other trekkies think of Damar?

thought he was one more of the more interesting side-characters in any star trek. a really well done arc. wish the story aligned with his arc occuring earlier, and him living and seeing how that played out. when you first saw the cardassians in TNG, I was underwhelmed to put it mildly. who would have thought they'd produce 3 of the most compelling alien characters in all of the treks?

I tend to bracket Damar with Nog as characters whose evolution underlined the bigger themes in the series and whose actors gave performances far above their apparent skill level. I wasn't impressed with Damar's first appearance, However, I laughed as he became more of an agitant, especially during the occupation episodes, needling Kira, Quark and even Weyoun. intellectually, I found it appropriate that he would evolve this nationalism, starting as someone who was more or less a functionary, to become a revolution and (potential) reformer. I wish that Damar had been more of a participant in the debates between Kira and Rusot than an observer.

I don't think he was particularly interesting until the last nine episodes. Before he decided to lead the Cardassian resistance he was more an accessory to other characters. He started out as an accessory to Dukat, then he was the logical choice to be the installed Cardassian leader. It wasn't until he was learning from Kira how to be a rebel and being confronted with the horror of what the Cardassians did to the Bajorans that he really became interesting.

And his make up looked really weird early on, like when he was just the XO on Dukhat's garbage hauler. Yep, he really moved up in the world...even got to marry B'elanna Torres.

What do I think of Damar? I think he really, really liked his Canar.

The more I think about it, we could really smear Damar's name.

-He began as an officer on a freighter; an obedient sidekick to the infamous Dukhat.
-He helped sell out his people to the Dominion
-He's an alcoholic
-He kills innocent young women
-He's also a notorious womanizer, despite being married and having a family
-It's hard to get an "honest day's work" out of him

He, as with most other characters (main and recurring) in DS9, is an interesting, multi-faceted and nuanced character. Though it's a shame he was killed at the end of the series he at least went out fighting to do the right thing.

My feelings on Damar are self-evident. He is the soul of Cardassia! A true patriot, a nuanced man, the epitome of Cardassia's wasted potential by the slaughter of millions.

He was a good character. I think he will always fall under Dukat and Garak on most people's most favorite lists but unlike Dukat who was kind of wasted in the final arc he grew and became a even better character.

Perhaps he referring to the old "Characters beyond redemption gain redemption by sacrificing their life" sort of thing, like Darth Vader: He is irredeemable...until he sacrifices his own life to save his son's. Not that Damar =/= Dark Lord Vader or anything.

Or how about Captain Ransom. At the end of the story he sacrifices himself to do the right thing, and we(the audience) can forgive him. It's a trope, and not limited to the 90's, and we should totally start a thread about it!

It would have been nice for him to survive for that very reason: so we would have an idea of the future of Cardassia. We would know the man that would lead it into the next phase of recovery and hopefully, a generally more ethical society (while still being the ultimate Cardassian patriot).

When you think about it they probably should have kepth him alive and killed Garak. Garak is the one who needed redemption and also he sort of represents old Cardissia more with his past in the Obsiden Order.

Garak has also lost everyone he cared about from Tain,Meela and Ziayal. I could see him wanting to die like they did and only freeing his planet was what was keeping him alive.
