What do non-Trekkies want for XII

What he brought up was a good point that I hadn't mulled over yet. Are they doing Star Trek over to tell new stories or to do twists on the old ones?
Something Orci said in an interview long before the last movie was completed seemed to indicate that he was much more interested in the spaces not already explored than retelling stories told before. Whether that's still the case is anyone's guess.

It's probably worth noting that there's a vast middle ground between hardcore Trekkies, who know every old episode by heart, and total newbies who have never seen a STAR TREK movie or tv show before. The real audience is mostly composed of people who have a casual familiarity with Trek, and fond memories of some of the earlier shows and movies, but don't own a copy of THE STAR TREK ENCYCLOPEDIA and have never been to a Trek convention. They know Kirk and Spock and Klingons and Khan, and transporters and phasers, but probably not what the Dominion War was or who T'Pring is . . . .

The hardcore Trekkies and total newbies are the extreme ends of the spectrum. Most of the audience is somewhere inbetween.

Both. Whatever is fun to do and makes money.

Well, if Paramount says "Do Khan" they will do it, and pretend to love it, no matter what.

I can't see the suits getting that specific. JJ & the gang made them lots of money the first time around. I'd hope they'd earned enough trust to be allowed to choose the topic of the next flick.

Well, despite the silliness of some of the answers I got, all the people I've asked were not total newbies and are the in-between types. Each person I've asked has probably seen a majority of the movies and at the very least a moderately sized handful of episodes of various series.

So yeah, the types who know Kirk/Spock/Enterprise/Klingons/etc.

Probably Klingons. It's mostly all that's missing to the folks who saw some episodes of the older series and a few of the movies and that's it.

I know a fair few individuals who fit the 'I'm not a Star Trek fan, no, don't say that... but I loved the new movie' demographic and several of them seem in agreement that the movie should have Klingons.

Hell, a couple of close friends who had never been exposed to Trek before in their lives, too. "Where are the Klingons?"
