What did Spock Prime tell Kirk about emotional transference?

rbnn

Lieutenant

What were the exact words Spock Prime used about emotional transference just after the mind meld in the cave on Delta Vega? For some reason I could never quite make them out precisely.

I cant remember exactly, but it was pretty much as you said anyway.

There is an emotional transference in some meld cases. that was basically all he said, there wasnt any specific science explained or details.

something like "I'm sorry, emotional transference can be an unfortunate side effect..."

Jeri, where are ya? :p

Spock apologized to Jim for the emtional "spillover". Apparently some of Spock's horror at the destruction of Vulcan and his feelings about his failure in general were transferred to Kirk through the mind meld. Kirk is obviously shocked and affected while Spock appears calm on the exterior - this sets up the "emotionally compromised" line later at the Federation Outpost.

I can never understand the words either.

It's the same with Robau when he's talking to George Kirk in the corridor leading to the turbolift. Half the stuff he says I can never understand.

Same with Spock talking to his mother at first. Finally I understood "In fact fine has multiple variations" or something like that. Very hard to make out the first time.

Also going back to Spock Prime and Kirk... later when the two Spocks meet, the elder talks of implying the destrucion of the universe would occur if Kirk told young Spock about old Spock... excuse me but where exactly was this line earlier on Delta Vega?? I think it might have been a deleted scene/passage that was taken out at the last minute.

Amanda says "you'll do fine." Spock says "Fine has variable definitions. Fine is unacceptable."

Spock Prime tells Kirk very strongly never to let Spock know of the future timeline. His tone of voice and context suggest its critical, more critical than the apparent safety of the Federation. Kirk would naturally infer a "universe-ending paradox" would ensue had he disobeyed.

(Nimoy) "Forgive me; emotional transference is an effect of the mind meld."

"Walk with me. -- If I don't report in 15 minutes, evacuate the crew. -- There is no help for us out here! Use auto pilot. Get off the ship. You're captain now, Mr. Kirk."

"I am hardly anxious, Mother -- and 'fine' has variable definitions; fine is -- unacceptable."

(Pine) "You're coming with us, right?

(Nimoy) "No, Jim; that is not my destiny."

"Your des-- ! He -- the other Spock is not going to believe me. Only you can explain what's happening."

"Under no circumstances can he be made aware of my existence! You must promise me this."

"Y-y-you're telling me that I-I-I can't tell YOU that I'm following your own orders? Why not? What happens?"

"Jim, this is one rule you cannot break. To stop Nero, you alone must take command of your ship."

-----------------

(Quinto) "How did you persuade him to keep your secret?"

(Nimoy) "He inferred that universe-ending paradoxes would ensue should he break his promise."

Thank you, very helpful.

Now a follow-up: can we infer from that that only a portion of the emotions Spock Prime felt were transferred to Kirk, or was Kirk feeling the full force of the emotions felt by Spock Prime?

This issue is critical because, as Franklin mentioned I think, if just a fraction of the emotions Spock Prime felt that were transferred overwhelmed Kirk, then the full force of the emotions Spock Prime felt would have crushed an ordinary human utterly.

Vulcans undergo training in order to meld, and they are capable of proceeding so that they don't damage the receiver. They can damage the receiver if they want to, as was done to T'Pol in ENT.

They can kill other Vulcans with mind melds, not just humans. That was one of the bases of their revolution of logic. People were using their mental powers to hurt others. That's from Trek literature.
