What did Pike do that was so great?

"Conveniently free up the captain's chair?" The man was disabled. I think it's time for a desk job.

And you're right, come to think of it, Wormhole, why the isn't someone from Starfleet Command promoting Kirk? Or, the Federation Council?

Exactly. One would think assigning a starship command would be the duty of, I don't know, Starfleet itself. No, no, the Academy can make these desicions now.

well there are battlefield promotions all the time.
robau also promoted senior kirk.

now afterward some other body would have to agree with it but yes the captain would have the authority to do so.

as for pike i suspect it was for over all career plus the forsight to put together the crew he did.
we know he has an agenda that starfleet needed new type of blood.. and that call paid off in a big way.

as for commodore.. well in classic trek kirk himself was promoted at an early age from captain straight to being admiral.

but how can a star trek fan forget that .
:)

Well if they made Kirk the captain of their flagship at the age of like twelve, this guy was probably overdue for a promotion by a couple of decades. Nice nod to TMP with the uniform though.

Well, I mean that out of universe. Kirk can't be captain if Pike still is. So, somehow, they have to write Pike out of the command chair.

The reasoning behind that is that Kirk was promoted at a time when the rank was being phased out. Newly promoted officers got the Admiral rank, but those who were already Commodores kept it until they were promoted. This explanation is to accoun for the presence of Commodore Probert in TMP.

really, can you cite something that says the commodore rank was being phased out..
i dont remember seeing a reference to that.
an from the few we saw pike wouldnt fit in with most other commodores.
someone who was still active in charge of either a ship or a starbase.

so pike better fits what happened to kirk.. someone promoted from captain to admiral to be based at starfleet headquaters.

The fact the rank disappeared by the 24th century would indicate that it was phased out.

Also, it's my understanding that whe the US Navy eliminated the Commodore rank, they did in a similar way to what I described.

that is a freaking what 70 year gap..
i am saying who knows how much longer commodore had been used. heck it could have been used to just before the start of tng.
the matter is that we know it was used up into the time of the motion picture .

Well there's also the fact that there are no more Commodores seen or mentioned after TMP, as stated on the DVD text commentary. Hell, I think the next time we see a Commodore in Trek after TMP was Admiral Forrest being Commodore Forrest in Enterprise's First Flight.

Commodore was the title of a one star naval flag officer; now it is Rear Admiral Lower half. They still use Commodore in the Navy today, but it is a reference to a Fleet Captain; say the Captain of a destroyer squadron, or the senior captain of a larger flotilla.

As far as Kirk getting promoted at the Star Fleet academy...usually the superintendants are O6 rank(Captain) or above. The order to actually promote someone comes from a flag officer, and that order is then relayed to the actual promoting officer through delegation. In actuality, congress screens all promotions from O4 and up. Guess the federation council has a hard on for cowboy diplomacy, which is why Kirk got the keys to the shiny new starship. He did bring it back in one piece too.

Hmm, almost forgot; the fact that Kirk was already a household name by what George Kirk had done on the Kelvin probably gave James T. Kirk a boost to his promotion status. Again, he brought the Camaro back home in one piece.
