What constitutes distracted driving to you?

I drive while talking on my phone. I am no more distracted than I am when I drive without talking on the phone.

Hands free phone or actually holding the phone? Because if it's the former then I agree but if it's the latter then it's bullshit.

Either or...I'm very good at multi-tasking.

Studies have proven that driving while on the hand held phone is more dangerous but I guess you can think that you're above all that and above the law. Which is curious because you're a lawyer.

I hypothesize that the person who talks constantly on a cell phone is probably more likely than average to be the kind of individual who doesn't pay attention ever, cell phone or not.

Furthermore, what kind of a call is being made? Yes, it does matter. If a cell phone is being used in a frank business-type fashion to deal with a problem of relevant nature (such as "I just got off the freeway; I will arrive in 5 minutes.") it is certainly not as distracting as a teenager-ish call (such as "Hey, how's it going, and, like, I can't wait to tell you about..."). Also relevant; when? If it is a two lane country road, that is different than the downtown freeway interchange at rush hour while merging.

I'm boiling this down to the suggestion that if you run over a raccoon because you were talking on a phone, under different circumstances you - being the same person - might still run over the raccoon, because you would be craned around looking out the back window, or doing something else equally foolish.

The problem is not tied quite as tightly to phones as it is to irresponsable people (though it does include phones.)

The cell phone.

I don't know what moron invented the bluetooth, but I'd like just five minutes alone with him.

In a locked room.

With a gun.
I love bluetooth technology. I don't use it for my cellphone, though.

One of my friends does. And he talks on his damn phone while we're doing 65 down the freeway.

On the upside, he drives me to my doctor, so when we have an accident because he can't spend more than half a nanosecond off his phone--while speeding, at least I'll get medical attention.

My newer car has a speakerphone, but I've also used the handset. Is that right? Some of us are sharper than the others. However, that may not necessarily mean we should deprives ourselves of our best while driving.

I'll say this, the discipline and skill to talk and drive, while upholding responsibility to concentration, is possible. Just ask an airline pilot about multitasking. But we all know the common yokel yapping about his box scores does not possess this discipline.

Obviously you missed the snarkiness of my post.

65 is speeding? :wtf:

It is when we're in a 55 zone.

That detail was missing in your post, hence the WTF.

How about talking on the phone and texting, talking to the person in the car with you and entering an address into the GPS at the same time?
