Manned mission to Mars....

Terrorist Nuke A Major City in Europe....


Two things, that I think, are possible, even probable. But each seem to be just beyond the bend. Lets just hope #2 isn't closer than we think...

This one was a battle between the pessimist in me and the optimist. The way NASA has been for the last little while and the lack of funding because of the recession...I'm thinking that a terrorist strike against a major European city is more likely. I hate to say that because obviously I'd rather the manned mission to mars happen first but I could see Al-Queda or someone else pulling off something catastrophic rather than NASA getting their act together.

Considering how horribly guarded material in Russia is (often no guards at all), and countries that have material and capabilities and don't like us could help those who want to use it against us, versus our econoy and practicallity of such a mission = get ready for ducktape and hiding udner desks!

Muslum aren't the only terroists out there, just the only one backed up with serious money. The european type are very bad as well.

My vote is a radioactive dust bomb in europe, our (america's) security is piss poor in places, but their boarders are wide open.

For your information, there are as many as 7 million Muslim citizens of the United States. There were hundreds of Muslims, both American and otherwise, killed in the World Trade Center when al-Qaeda attacked, and they didn't care about that.

What you need to understand is that Islamist militancy is not primarily directed against the West. The real conflict is between traditionalist and modernist factions within Islam. The culture is in the midst of a struggle to decide its future, and we only got dragged into it because of the sides we've taken. Thousands of Muslims have fallen victim to Islamist terrorism. Radical fundamentalists have very narrow and strict ideas of what constitutes being a good Muslim, and most Muslims would fall short of those standards, since most Muslims are liberal or moderate rather than fundamentalist. The militants have no problem punishing Muslims they consider traitors or apostates because of their more liberal views or their cooperation with the West.

Mars, and I don't think a Mars mission is very likely in the next 50 years. It is too hard to make a nuclear weapon and too easy to trace where they come from. Countries spend billions of dollars and years of research to complete one crude one. Even a country like Iran is not just going to turn one over to a bunch of nobodies. Russia is the best possibility for obtaining one, but I just don't see it happening. The consequences for any country would be too deep.
