And while they're at it, CBS Digital needs to dub over the dialogue that establishes Lenore's age as nineteen. A 33-year-old male starship captain making out with a 19-year-old female passenger? Tsk tsk tsk tsk...

...Least she's legal age. ;)

I don't see a thing wrong with it. They're both adults, what business is it of anybody's what their age difference is?

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the

I expect the usual space scenes and maybe the Astral Queen.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the

Just watched the trailer... the star fields on the observation deck are moving. Fanboys Rejoice!

Yeah, at least she wasn't 300 going on 12, like Miri. ;)

Also, Kodos should shoot first.

Nice, I have quite a few SF novels with covers filled with ships drawn along those lines, a look from the 70s.

I am looking forward to see how well the moving starfields were done.
Is there a link for the trailer or is it on startrek.com?

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the

I'm still not 100% sure my local Roanoke channel is showing it today...or if they're airing a rerun of an episode from last season. Can't get a straight answer.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the

I just watched this. As has been said, there isn't much for CBS Digital to do with this episode.

There is an absolutely glorious flyby while the Enterprise is in orbit at the beginning of the episode. I don't remember seeing that particular shot before. Maybe it is new. Certainly the CGI model has never looked better.

Sorry, no Astral Queen. They would have had to cut away from our hero to put in a shot that never existed in the first place. That would have been an excessive fanboy wank and I'm glad they didn't do it. I'd never noticed before how Kirk's communicator flipped open way too far during that scene, with the lid folding backwards at an awkward angle.

In the observation lounge scene, you couldn't see into the hanger deck but the stars did move at varying speeds convincingly behind Kirk and Lenore. Nice. And no streaking as later series did but Star Trek never did. Nicer still.

I also think this one maybe benefited from the syndication cuts. I have to admit The Conscience of the King has always been in the bottom third of my personal Star Trek episode rankings but this version was more tightly paced. There is still too much Shakespearean overacting but we can't have everything. Since I haven't seen this one in a while, I was reminded of some great moments I'd forgotten about:

- the night scenes on board the Enterprise, with the lights all down and Spock manning an abandoned bridge

- death by Formula 409! with the squirt bottle attempted murder of Kevin Reilly

- the Star Trek theme played by a jazz combo during the cocktail party

- an "if looks could kill" stare by Janice Rand as she gets off of the turbolift and Lenore gets on in her fur dress that barely covered anything

- "Double Red Alert!" called by Kirk with the phaser overload in his quarters

- an excellent Big Three conversation between Kirk, McCoy and Spock in the captain's quarters when Spock confronts Kirk over going after Kodos

It was an enjoyable hour well spent. :bolian:

Heh, I started imagining it was Cillit Bang (which those in N. America call Easy-Off BAM so I believe)

I'd die of laughter if they used the prison ship from Battlestar Galactica as the Astral Queen.

That wouldn't be a bad idea, at all.

It's not like the art department didn't "kitbash" the set pieces 99% of the time.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the

That 409 squeeze bottle was very futuristic when we first saw it back then! Most liquids still came in glass bottles with screw caps. When plastic containers started popping up, the commercials would always say "Now in new, no-break plastic bottle!" And those squeeze-shooters were amazing at first.

My favorite moment in the ep is the dramatic pause contest between Shatner and Moss:

Karidian: "Have you gotten... everything you wanted... Captain?"

Kirk: "If I had gotten... everything I wanted... Youmightnotleavethisroomalive."

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the

^ This episode could be renamed Scene Chewing 101 just for that !

One can only imagine the magnitude of crisis that would have necessitated use of the never-seen "Double-Dog Red Alert".

Of course, a triple-dog red alert would have persuaded Scotty to touch the matter/antimatter integrator with his tongue.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the

^But Kirk would face a Starfleet Board of Inquiry to explain his breach of protocol in skipping the "Triple Red Alert".

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the

They did a nice job on the episode.
The ship shots and the moving starfield in the windows were much improved.
As other posters have pointed out this episode has too many filler scenes and not enough substance. A slow moving episode. Some of the better parts of the episode are: the heated discussion between Kirk Spock & McCoy, the dimed-light corridor scene, the "Riley factor" and the ship shots. There seems to be an overabundance of fly-by ship shots in this episode to take up time. Overall I give this episode a 5 out of 10.

Wasn't the Astral Queen destroyed by an asteroid collision while in orbit of Vesta anyway? Three survivors, incredibly enough?
