Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In Conscience of the
I just watched this. As has been said, there isn't much for CBS Digital to do with this episode.
There is an absolutely glorious flyby while the Enterprise is in orbit at the beginning of the episode. I don't remember seeing that particular shot before. Maybe it is new. Certainly the CGI model has never looked better.
Sorry, no Astral Queen. They would have had to cut away from our hero to put in a shot that never existed in the first place. That would have been an excessive fanboy wank and I'm glad they didn't do it. I'd never noticed before how Kirk's communicator flipped open way too far during that scene, with the lid folding backwards at an awkward angle.
In the observation lounge scene, you couldn't see into the hanger deck but the stars did move at varying speeds convincingly behind Kirk and Lenore. Nice. And no streaking as later series did but Star Trek never did. Nicer still.
I also think this one maybe benefited from the syndication cuts. I have to admit
The Conscience of the King has always been in the bottom third of my personal Star Trek episode rankings but this version was more tightly paced. There is still too much Shakespearean overacting but we can't have everything. Since I haven't seen this one in a while, I was reminded of some great moments I'd forgotten about:
- the night scenes on board the Enterprise, with the lights all down and Spock manning an abandoned bridge
- death by Formula 409! with the squirt bottle attempted murder of Kevin Reilly
- the Star Trek theme played by a jazz combo during the cocktail party
- an "if looks could kill" stare by Janice Rand as she gets off of the turbolift and Lenore gets on in her fur dress that barely covered anything
- "Double Red Alert!" called by Kirk with the phaser overload in his quarters
- an excellent Big Three conversation between Kirk, McCoy and Spock in the captain's quarters when Spock confronts Kirk over going after Kodos
It was an enjoyable hour well spent.
