What Changes Would You Have For "The Changeling"?

AC84

Captain
Captain
Sorry for the extra late post.

Other than the space shots, I once again can't remeber anything that needs improvement.

One might always fiddle with the phaser effects when the doomed redshirts try to stop this menace. Or with the invisible barrier that Nomad erects to stop the phaser beams. But TOS-R hasn't done much with such things in general.

Perhaps "animate" the diagram of Sol system that Nomad watches at Auxiliary Control?

Timo Saloniemi

*The big explosions in the teaser.
*Take Pluto out of the solar system diagram and change the dialogue so Nomad says "...eight natural satellites."
*the "mind probe" that Nomad shoots at Uhura should be re-done.
*the "ray" that Nomad shoots at all the redshirts and Scotty should be re-done
*edit out the Uhura "re-education" scene...please.
*BIG explosion at the end when Nomad self-destructs

That map of the solar system needs to be replaced STAT. It was cheesy and amateur-looking then, like some pencil tracing or overhead projector display.

Psst...It was meant to be so that NOMAD wouldn't recognoze the system. ;)

That might explain the "by: Phillip J. Fry...Age 20" barely legible under the orbit ring of Neptune. :D

Well, you got your wish.

(*Spoiler Ahead*)

They left the map completely unchanged. However, the shot of Nomad exploding into debris and mist at the end of the episode was redone and now looks a hundred times better and more realistic.

The big energy bolts by Nomad at the beginning of the episode were neat. Other than that and the usual space shots of Enterprise I don't think anything was changed.

I noticed some interesting and funny lines of dialogue from Nomad (e.g "the unit Scott is a primitive structure with insufficient safe guards built in"), that were in earlier syndication versions are no longer there. I guess that's the price to pay for the ever increasing commercial breaks.

Unfortunately the silly Uhura total mind wipe and the rapid one week recovery scenes are still there.

They put a later-series-type force field in the brig...then left in the poorly-animated phaser/Nomad-death-ray shots seconds later.

And, frankly, when I read the novelization of TMP days before the premiere, I thought "The Changeling"...and then the pretty pictures of TMP let me compartmentalize that. But since I haven't rewatched this in years, I'm literally STUNNED how closely the plot hews to TMP's. I mean, I previously considered them "similar". Now I realize they are "virtually identical", short of the differences between '60s TV show and late-'70s Motion Picture (and additional characters).

Quite the similarity.

The goofy, almost hand-drawn "beam" projected over Uhura's face when Nomad wipes her memory wasn't changed...sadly. That thing has always looked like complete and utter crap, even for a tight-budget 1967 optical effect.

I guess they'd need a clean piece of film to do that. Can't actually erase an existing effect to add a new one.

Perhaps not. It just looks so cheesy even for 1967 that it's a damn shame something couldn't have been done. Maybe they could have overlaid something new on top of the old drawn-in optical. It might have looked a little messy and "busy" but it beats the original effect.
