What can be improved for season 2?

How many hours a week do you have for "mildly amusing?"
I'm usually around here late at night before going to bed or checking in once or twice on my days off from work.
So I'd guestimate maybe 4-6 hours a week tops.
I'm old and semi-retired so I've got more than enough spare time to be "mildly amused" about that much.
:nyah:

Meh, this place would be pretty boring without the people who are critical of Discovery.

Critical is fine. Debate over the good, the bad, the merits of its strengths and the bitterness of it's flaws is not only acceptable, but what makes discussion interesting.

What's not is people who have had nothing but disgust or disinterest for it since before it aired bringing toxicity into what should be an enjoyable debate. If there's NOTHING you like about it, stop watching and move along.

We're into the second season now, it's not going away, so what's happening is those who are angry that their narrow vision of Star Trek isn't on the screen are trying to ruin this place for anyone who enjoys even the smallest part of it.

And the idea that you hate a show with so much passion, and have no interest in watching it, yet spend hours of your day spewing venom at it is, frankly, disturbing.

The reverse can also be annoying.

Yes, so annoying when people enjoy something and have nothing but praise!

Personally, back when I was younger and did electronic music, I hated it when people just gave me praise and told me it was great. I really wanted the flaws to be pointed out so I could work to improve my craft.

That's a very different concern. An artist relies on constructive criticism, that's why the opinions of friends and loved ones are meaningless. But fans should not be considered "annoying" to other fans if they have nothing but praise. I'm certainly not one of them (couldn't stand some of the acting in Season 1)-- but if there was a fan in here telling me how much he loved season 1, and his hopes for what they'd do for Season 2, I can't imagine finding that troublesome in any way.

There's a difference between a critic and a Debbie Downer.

Criticism is meant to be constructive, what we have here are people complaining that it’s different from a show made decades ago.

Beyond that, they're people who hate it, hate everything about it, and claim they won't ever watch another episode. But still feel the need to inject themselves into the discussion. Maybe I should spend my day screaming at fans of DC movies how much all their movies suck.

Nah. I like their comics and cartoons, but gave up on their films long ago. It's not worth my time or energy to be a baby about it.

It does seem odd that people who stopped watching and are "done with it" are still hanging around. Why post in a forum of a show you don't watch? On the other hand, it makes sense for them to want to hang out here around the time Season 2 starts if they want to see what the new changes will bring (even if it's only to satisfy their curiosity) but, after that, once again, my thoughts are: "What the Hell are you doing? Is this seriously how you get your kicks?"

For someone who's still watching, that's different. Or someone who's critical of the show but doesn't hate it and is along for the ride. It all depends. For example, someone like eschaton is cool. He brings up good points. I might not always agree with him but he brings something to the table. He's made me think of certain elements in relation to the show that I wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

Speaking as someone highly critical of DSC (but liked a lot about it), I'm here to talk about what works and doesn't work, things we like and things we don't like.

I can't stand the vacuous "criticisms" or meaningless praise, but I'd rather hear the latter than the former if I had to make that awful choice. What really irks me though is people rounding anyone with any criticism into a capital H Hater, no matter how valid the criticism (and even if they like the thing they have criticism of).

When DSC started, my thoughts on the first two episodes were: I loved Burnham, and thought the writing was bland. When I brought this up, I was told that my criticism was because I hate women or black women or seeing any representation in media, which is about as far from the truth as you can get. That response has given way as we approach S2 to a more generalized, "You don't like it, don't come here, don't talk about it, you're a troll".

If I hated DSC, I wouldn't bother talking about it here. As for why some other folks who "stopped watching and are 'done with it' are still hanging around", I must infer that at least some of them are Trek lovers, and therefore want to talk about Trek, even if they think it's bad Trek. But yes, many are probably just here to talk shite.

I think we have quite a small number of true haters — by Trek board standards — so the sniping at people who dare to criticize the show gets quite old. It does nothing to encourage thoughtful discourse.

This can't be emphasized enough. There are some bad apples here and they know what they're doing, they know exactly what they're doing, but for the vast majority of people who are critical, I know they're just expressing their thoughts and feedback. If the only opinions allowed or encouraged were 100% in favor of the show, then it wouldn't be a discussion board, but a propaganda board.

Lorca is my Discovery role model in as much as I aspire to give as few fucks about anything as he did when they were trying to save the space whale.

If you love STD, love STD. Don't be insecure in your fandom. Even if others don't agree with you, their opinions shouldn't affect your personal feelings about the series.

Discovery is a divisive show, it was intended to be that way. So this argumentative discourse and discussion isn't going anywhere.
