What Became of Nimbus III/The Planet of Galactic Peace?

Captain Clark Terrell

Nimbus III was introduced in TFF as an experiment undertaken by the Federation, the Klingons and the Romulans in 2267 as a means of improving relationships among the three powers, a venture that didn't appear to have been successful--although Korrd, St. John Talbot and Caithlin Dar were on friendly terms by the end of TFF.

The planet was never seen again, which makes me wonder what happened to the settlement there. Sybok's men commandeered the area to lure Kirk and the Enterprise to the system, but they had no reason to stay there once their mission was over. Sybok was dead, and it's hard to believe Kirk would simply have let his followers return to the system.

Come to think of it, were any of Sybok's men arrested or charged for their part in hijacking the Enterprise? And Korrd, Talbot and Dar were complicit in his plan to lure a ship to Nimbus III. Was each replaced by another representative? It would be interesting to see the planet revisited in a novel, but that's a discussion best had elsewhere.

It doesn't seem to have been successful because the powers weren't trying. Sending three washed-up no-names to a craphole planet in the middle of nowhere is just paying lip service to the concept and not even much of that.

How much effort did each power put forth to try to rescue their ambassadors?

We know from "The Neutral Zone" that the Romulans withdrew from contact with the Federation 53 years before the episode. So if there were still Romulan representatives there in 2311, they would have been gone after that. Since the Federation and the Klingons had already signed a treaty, they probably didn't need it just for the two of them. So the settlement may still be there after 2311, but I'm willing to bet it no longer serves its original purpose as the "Planet of Galactic Peace".

After Sybok mind-rape each of them sequentially with his BS "take away your pain" act, I doubt they could be held responsible for their actions in a court of law.

The Federation had previous to TFF experienced beings with mind control capacities.

:)

After the representative leave for good with the withdrawl of the Romulans, I would assume the colony is abandoned. There is nothing there. It has not value that was are aware of aside that it was to be used as the Planet of Galactic Peace. It is has no other value, I would assume the people would leave.

Probably not. Sybok had a degree of mental control over them, so they were probably not legally responsible for anything they did. Extreme emotional disturbance, you could call it.

As for the fate of Nimbus III: I don't think it was abandoned. The people living there were pretty much rejected from any other civilized world - the "dregs of the galaxy", as Talbot called them. So there'd really be nowhere for them to go back to. They may well have decided to stay on Nimbus and make their own society, where no one would judge them.

According to Star Trek Online, Nimbus III still exists, along with its capital of Paradise City. The STO official story is this:

Star Trek Online Database said:
Named the "Planet of Galactic Peace" in 2267 after the Federation-Klingon War, Nimbus III was supposed to be the model for a new age of peace and mutual cooperation. It was instead an inhospitable rock that was soon controlled by gangs and beset by violence. After the Vulcan Sybok briefly occupied the capital of Paradise City in 2287, the Romulans, Klingons, and Federation all pledged funds and assistance to help the planet.

The cleanup effort was a failure, and the population rebelled constantly against anyone they saw as "authority". The last Starfleet officers were evacuated in 2318. Since then the planet has been a haven for criminal operations and unchecked violence.

STO's storyline begins 30 years after the prime timeline movies. Of course, STO is considered "soft canon" since none of it appears onscreen, but it's as good a story as any.

This.

Yeah, Nimbus III is still there, but its diplomatic importance (what little it had to begin with) is long since gone, IMO. Just another dirtball planet now.

What the hell was the cause of all of the pollution on the planet, though? From what little we saw of it, there was no industrial centre of any kind. No stand-alone factory, anywhere. Just a hastily-constructed village, which seemed sparcely populated. All anybody had to fight with was pebble-shooters. In fact, the bald guy with the bad teeth was digging holes in his yard for tasty grubs, perhaps as a way to make a living. No starships are even allowed, it seems. So the pollution came about ... how, exactly?

It could just have been an arid (or mostly arid) planet racked with occasional dust storms here and there.

Understood & Confirmed! Besides, if it was really all that polluted, their skin and eyes would burn - but, in this case, it seems a hospital's mask is more than sufficient to counter the effects.

Maybe they started moisture farming?

You can hire a freighter there to take you someplace else.

None of the novels (except for The Needs of the Many) take STO into account, so I see no particular reason to care about anything that STO says.
