What authors (who do not write Trek lit) would you like to write it?

Re: What authors (who do not write Trek lit) would you like to write i

^Right. Greg Bear did Trek before he became famous for his original work. He even had some fan art published in the Star Trek Concordance.

Robert J Sawyer for a TNG one (he wrote a novel which looked like a Trek Novel and was good)

Which of his novels are you referring to?

Just a guess: Hugh Cambridge may be referring to his novel Starplex, a space opera/adventure novel that Sawyer says in its introduction was inspired by his childhood love of Star Trek.

That's one I haven't read, so it makes sense I didn't make the connection. Most of his books are pretty earth-bound, at least recently.

And he just wrote a Halo novel, so he's not averse to tie-in projects.

Two, with a third forthcoming I believe - though those are so far removed from the games that they're not really your typical tie-in. Though he also wrote a pretty good Star Wars novel back c. 2000, Rogue Planet. :)

Hah, what's funny is that I was vaguely aware of the book, so I must have known he had. In this case, I'd love to see him try his hand at it again :)

John Ostrander. He's currently writing Star Wars comics for Dark Horse. Plus he's one of my fave 1980s writers having delivered an acclaimed run on Suicide Squad (plus others in the 1980s/90s).

In the end, I think we need more Star Trek comics from IDW. I think they are quicker read than the novels. So, I like having more ST comic book "appetizers" alongside my ST novel "meals" ;)

I agre about Ostrander he is a master of the continuity.

Tom Clancy! TOM CLANCY! TOM CLANCY! TOM CLANCY!

Too much? Oh, well...

I'm actually a huge Gaiman fan (have met him twice) but his episode of Babylon 5 was... not good. I think he might suck at writing Trek. He did have an awesome #klingonhuck hashtag last year (retooling famous quotes from Huckleberry Finn with Klingon lore) so he is clearly a fan for Trek, conversant in Klingon culture.

Given how fundamentally different Star Trek's and Babylon 5's creative conceits are -- to say nothing of practical differences, such as budget, season arc structure, and the relative talents of their respective casts -- I'm really not sure that one bad episode of B5 tells us anything about Gaiman's ability to write good Star Trek.

Besides, his Doctor Who episode was amazing.

Your guess is right, I was speaking about Starplex.
I read a lot of books from Robert J sawyer last year and was never disappointed. :techman:

It was an okay episode. In NuWho, there have been worse episodes, but there have in my opinion been better ones.

It was! Do you know if he will be doing more, or other televison? Wasn't there stories of adapting American Gods last year?

But it's not tv depictions we're on about here, its his ability with prose (or comics). And no can deny Gaiman is a wonderful writer both of established properties (for example, in his DC & Marvel work) and his own original fiction.

I read 8 or 9, I think, and got to WWW: Wake and thought it was really bad and stopped. Never read Starplex though, I'll give it a look.

He did "Day of the Dead," right? I liked that one. At the very least, after two and a half years of JMS writing every single script, it was refreshing to hear another authorial voice for a change, another way of writing dialogue and thinking about story and character.

Yep, that's the one.

Just as an interesting bit of trivia, he also had one of the alien races in B5 named after him. The Gaim are the insect people who wear suits looking suspiciously similar to Dream of the Endless in his full attire.

Yeah, I've yet to read Starplex, but I likely will after the recommendation. I've read the Neanderthal Parallax and that was really good. He did really well in capturing the alien feel of the neanderthal world, which makes me feel he'd do well in describing many of the alien landscapes in Trek.

Re: What authors (who do not write Trek lit) would you like to write i

Sawyer's book Calculating God is muy excellente as well. Probably my favorite of his.

(Full disclosure: I'm an acquaintance of Sawyer's in real life, so my opinion of his work may be biased. :) )

Sci, I like your location. I'm waiting for Texas to follow suit but I may need a Vulcan lifetime for that to happen.

A writer I would like to see tackle Star Trek is Jeffery Deaver. His character writing and action scenes are exceptional
