What are your thoughts about seeing the prime universe again?

I'll have you know that I am now proudly in the denial camp that Fuller is giving trufans lip service and that Discovery is in fact a secret reboot of Star Trek. Take that how you will; I'm not really worried about anyone else's opinion about it.

While I certainly don't agree with this opinion, and think this assessment will probably be disproven as soon as the pilot hits, I certainly think this is a valid opinion to have, and one that might be worth it's own discussion.

I guess my question is this: how much can Kurtzman, Fuller and Company change, still claim it is the Prime universe and have fandom buy it? Or will some fans burning desire for it to be "Prime" overwhelm their ability to recognize it simply doesn't fit?

Can they blow up Remus in 2255 and still claim it is Prime?

All just my personal curiosity.

I'm just going out on a limb here and predict: they won't blow up Remus.
Or do other universe-altering changes that directly contradict canon. Small inconsistencies, plot holes and mistakes? Of course. Every Trek series has them. Didn't stop Enterprise from being considered "prime universe" and having cross-over events with the TNG crew (although... let's not talk about that again), and introduce and give backstories to plots and species from TOS. Will STD fit in with every detail? Definitely not. Will it fit overall in the greater scheme of things? Most certainly.

Don't blow up the Remans! I like them. They are cool and scary, and they are an oppressed species. They could tell a lot of stories there. Or blow it up and make them refugees. Even more relevant.

Where have I complained about Discovery? Seriously?

Must be this post...

I disagree that it is going to be in the Prime universe, in anything but name. That isn't a complaint, that is a reading of what has been posted by the various figures.

The showrunner is calling it the Prime universe so thats what it is. Just get over it. This is not the NuTrek universe its the Prime. Its ok to admit you were wrong.

FGeez its

I seriously think you folks are now wondering just how "Prime", Discovery is going to be. That's why there's all this bellyaching towards people who are bringing up Fuller's comments about reimagining the visual look.

There's no real reason to redesign the uniforms. Use better material and they would work fine. No real reason to redesign the aliens. Use modern film techniques and they would be fine. No real reason to redesign the look. Just introduce differences in technology. But the same basic colors/style would work with modern film techniques.

Continuing, Fuller said that “we’re going to try to achieve a new look for Star Trek that is very much Star Trek, but also our interpretation of Star Trek. And I love [for] each of the shows I work on to have a distinct esthetic. So being able to apply the color palette of some of these, whether it’s Hannibal or Pushing Daisies, and going a different direction with science fiction, it just felt like it was a good place to start our signature look for the Star Trek universe and work our way forward as we continue to tell stories.”

I could be wrong. But I don't think Fuller's "Prime" universe commitment is as solid as some folks think it is...

^^

I agree.

While one season may be in the 'prime rib'* universe....we may have some adventures (or seasons) in the Kelvin Universe (or another universe altogether).

*Yes, that was intentional.

Great idea! And some Starfleet admirals don't want them relocated to Federation planets because they're afraid that they have spies/terrorists in their midst. Someone should be taking notes of this.

Yup. Really, he should have kept is mouth shut. It was obviously a ploy.

Between that, the derivate title ("The intrepid starship sets off on a voyage of discovery." I mean, really.) all his talk about the true meaning of Star Trek :coughgenesvisioncough:, I think he's trying too hard to indulge peoples' lost nostalgia.

Even now there are still some fans refusing to admit they were wrong. It's all rather sad really.

Yep!

The early renders of the Discovery look NOTHING like the Abramsverse.
Are you sure about that?

I'm firmly in the wait and see camp.

Not a frame of film has been shot yet, only quotes from Fuller about what would be cool to do and what the intent is (not having to keep up with the K-verse). The new show might be set in the Prime U, but may not look or feel anything like it.

All the "nyah nyah" from the Primers is a little premature.

LOL How silly is that?

Prime universe has got nothing to do with the look of the show. TMP was very different from TOS and TNG was different from TOS as well.

It's about the setting of the show and how some people claimed that a new Star Trek TV show could or would never be set in that timeline ever again. Prime = dead. THAT was the message.

They all should eat humble pie.

I wonder what the people intent on Discovery being PRIME think about Enterprise? That's set in the prime universe, ties directly into TOS and TNG episodes, while retconning and ignoring elements of both (most notably cloaking devices being new in TOS, early encounters with the Ferengi and Borg) AND explicitly undergoing several changes to the timeline, most notably when the Xindi attacked Earth.
There are some that insist ENT is an alternate timeline, continuing on from the events of First Contact, and that was before the twist at the end of season 2.

Like I suspect Discovery will be, ENT is Prime universe in broad strokes.

Enterprise was a horrible show better best forgotten is my take on it. Since it occurs supposedly prior to TOS it's easily ignored. If Discovery turns out the same way I'll ignore that too. I'm not a fan of prequels to be honest. Enterprise was set in the Prime timeline and did mess with the continuity but worse than that it was a really bad show. Prime or not, a show needs to be worth watching and Enterprise was rarely worth viewing (IMO).

.....and that we should just let it go, what was your reaction when you heard that this show is taking place in the prime universe? Were you glad that the prime universe is coming back?
I hadn't quite given up hope, but I did feel that there was only about a 50% chance that this series would take place in the Prime Universe, and that if it didn't, then we'd never see it again.

Needless to say, I was over the moon when I heard of the setting!

I was always pro prime, and expected it would be, based on numerous arguments myself and others made over the last few months. Most of which seem to have been vindicated by the comments made by fuller et al.

So, here's to the future, the past of the future, our past future, Er...
