They were fleeing from a hostile entity that they could just barely stay ahead of. I don't think they could afford to slow down, even briefly, until the people on the saucer were safely evacuated.

Usually the people that act like that are the same posters who dismiss Rottentomatoes, IMDB and every other metric out there that judges popularity EXCEPT polls that are taken here. Somehow, a forum with barely a hundred people in it should be trusted over regulated sites with hundreds of thousands of people.

Popularity just isn't that important of a concept to me as a Star Trek fan.
There should be a middle ground between Berman's try not to mention it if it can be helped and modern Trek's mine it for all it's worth.
It did feel like it was loosened a bit once we got past TNG. I notice a lot of little nods to TOS in DS9, Voyager and, especially, Enterprise.
Mainly because Gene was dead by then. The no-reference policy was largely borne out of the divorce settlement with his first wife to avoid paying her part of the royalties.
In the context of 1979, TMP was big and I agree it's fantastic, with many worthy set pieces and overall themes.
The "overly long" beauty tour was a unique context of the time, given the TV show modelwork by comparison. It's easily mockable, but the context of the time in 1979 sets a different view entirely. That said, I do sometimes FF through it. But to be fair, the only version I watch is the extended tv movie cut (remastered lovingly in 4K widescreen, no less!) where there's more I won't FF through. Plus, when they enter V'Ger, it's like what the Doctor Who opening titles should have been.
And the overall plot was a partial redo of "The Changeling", but given the superficial antics of spectacle with reversible death and mind wiping and casually sexist comments strewn in that one, TMP is "The Changeling" done right.
I think, for me, that the biggest difference between now and then was that the callback was rarely the story. It was just a nice nugget if you paid attention to the franchise.
There are still people who moan and whine about Phlox feeding a tribble to one of his Sickbay animals. "It's too early, Hoshi shouldn't see a tribble a century before Edward Larkin or Kirk's crew!"
Hate to break the news, nerds, but the prequel concept in any franchise usually means, "hey, we're seeing this before anyone's supposed to." And there's nothing in canon saying NO humans knew about tribbles before Kirk. Cyrano Jones clearly did.

I suspect this applies to most all of us here. We're use to searching for the obscure or unique.
I only just realized this, but on the classic old question of “Who’s your favorite Captain?”, I think it may be Archer, of all people.
He’s earnest. He’s honestly trying, and he wants to learn. He’s wide open and eager, but not to the point that adversity doesn’t realistically toughen him up. He has prejudices, but is able and willing to learn to leave them behind. There’s no bullshit or bravado to him; the former is sometimes true of Picard, and the latter is often true of pretty much every other Captain but Saru (my other favorite). He doesn’t “play the Captain”, which I realize many viewers don’t like about him; he’s a guy, doing his best. And I like him a lot.
