What are your opinions regarding Star Trek that are, shall we say, unorthodox?

Eschewing TOS one minute and then not only using verbal references the next but including an onscreen graphic of Kirk's ship.
Paramount was notoriously cheap in those days so they used what they had rather than make anything new so just used the Franz Joseph stuff

Hell, Gene and the TNG graphics team didn't even use the right NCC-1701 for the original 1987 screen image. They used the TMP Refit for the TOS ship, which the Remastered episode later fixed.

Just because I’ve watched both recently….

I think when they did the 4K remaster of TMP Directors Cut a couple years ago they should have inserted a picture of the NX-01 over the Ringship.

When they did TOS-R they should have inserted some footage from Trials and Tribbleations into the Trouble with Tribbles. Like Kirk interrogating O’Brien, Worf beating up Klingons or Sisko and Dax on the bridge.

The second episode was a “sequel” to “The Naked Time”. With direct references to it.

What the thinking was with “…Farpoint” is anyone’s guess. Rumors have it that Roddenberry wanted the show as far from TOS as possible. The product doesn’t match the rumors.

I wonder if he might have being trying to position TNG as a traditional primetime drama, rather than a sci-fi show, because he thought that the opposite decision had doomed TOS.

I'd replace the TOS Enterprise since Decker tells the Iliaprobe, "all those vessels were called Enterprise." Past tense. The TMP ship is the TOS ship, just refitted. And it's still in existence, no past tense.

The ringship and NX-01 should be the last two images in that alcove. I doubt we'll see that edited into the movie anytime soon, but I'd applaud it.
