It was so good they adapted it to the Kelvinverse for Greenwood's Pike. It was pretty slick-looking.
Kirk's Admiral uniform is overrated. It's nice but it's not THAT good.
The only bad uniforms in TMP are the "onesie" that a few people (notably Decker) have to wear. It's also what Kirk and Scott are wearing in the last scene.
But the two piece unis are great. And the short sleeve uniforms might be my favorite Star Trek uniform.
For a Captain of a health spa, IMO. Spock and Scotty were long-sleeved throughout while on the ship. I wish Kirky and Uhura had been similarly so. I'd prefer all out nudity to the shortsleeves, but there goes the G-rating.

You have odd looking bathrobes. You may be thinking of one of Sulu's uniforms, though.
In truth, I have exactly one bathrobe ripped in so many places not even Shatner would tolerate it. I did enjoy Uhura returning to her original yellow/gold for 15 minutes, anyhow. If Sulu and Chekov preferred their TMP shortsleeves, they're basically interchangeable anyway. Does anyone really want to see a shortsleeved Scotty shedding hairs all over the warp engines?
I would imagine the innards of Engineering are a clean area. If one is working there, they have to be dressed appropriately. Everyone there is either in hazard suits or long sleeves.
I dislike the design element around the neck that echos the black pointed collar from the TOS uniforms. Both "good" uniforms (Admiral and Short sleeve) don't have that.
End result: a pristine engine room and a ''WKRP''-style casual bridge. No wonder Scotty didn't react to the multiple insults thrown at Kirk on K7.
Dress for your job. Why should a helmsman have to dress like an engineer?
