What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Got a new one:
People who insist that you call them a Trekker instead of a Trekkie are more deserving of the negative connotation of Trekkie.

(Personally I don't really care what you call me, as long as it's not disparaging!)
Back in the day when my passion for ST really sparked, I didn’t like “Trekkie” and used the “Trekker” moniker for a bit until I thought about that one and then decided I was an “Ob” (for obsessed). Then I thought about that one too an went “wait, um…”. Nowadays, my spouse just calls me a “geek” (as opposed to “nerd”) and it’s quite endearing and I gush. So yeah, as long as it’s not disparaging...

I think Pen Pals is one of the best TNG episodes by far. I might even enjoy it more than all other prime directive episodes.
I really got into this episode only recently, I have obviously watched it before but maybe I'm a different kind of viewer these days.
On last revisit it was really good.

Another amazing deep cut is The Minds Eye from season 2. It's like that awesome movie The Manchurian Candidate without all the boring melodrama from the movie. Anything with Romulan political intrigue is an unquestionable banger. I can't believe I thought it was boring and forgettable as a kid. I think it's because them torturing Geordi reminded me of the snooze fest Star Trek Generations.

"The Royale" is an A-tier TNG episode. I said it many years ago, I'll say it now. Weird, mysterious, funny, quirky and also fills in a chapter in 21st century Earth space exploration and U.S. history. There's almost nothing I dislike about it.
Just rewatched it today and was about to post the same thing lol. It's a little slow but the ending is amazing. People also misunderstand and think the episode is lambasting itself. They talk about how the dialogue and writing of the book is so bad. The entire point is that any genre story becomes dated to future generations (Including Star Trek TOS even by that point). The Royale feels no different than your typical classic noir story.

"The Royale" is an excellent episode. It not only has a fantastically creepy vibe throughout (especially the scene in darkness just outside the hotel doors) but it is a mystery that is not fully solved. Who were the aliens? Why bring him here? Why is it still going so long after his death?

Plus it continues the subtle (and possibly unintentional) arc/message of TNG season 2... space is extremely dangerous.

It's one of the episodes my wife and I will watch around Halloween for mood. (I will die on this hill... TNG did horror/creepy better than any of the other shows in the franchise.)

Ironic considering how little ST actually shows of future culture. I know the irl reasons for it but seeing them only care about Shakespeare and WW2 leaves a lot to be desired

I think a lot of TNG Seasons 1 & 2 is better than latter season TNG. Sure the scripts could use a little refinement and they're a lot problematic (Code of Honour) but for the most part I find them far more imaginative, creative and engaging than a good portion of Season 5-7, especially 7.
