What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Kind of. It's the same in Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness up until it gets badly damaged by the Vengeance. At the end we see it after extensive repairs and it has some differences (much larger impulse engines, slightly different nacelle fins, possibly additional phaser turrets):

Apparently it had further refit work between Into Darkness and Beyond because it then changes significantly between those films. The neck is made much skinnier; the nacelle pylons are swept back; and the nacelles themselves are physically smaller. This picture of the Eaglemoss models shows the differences quite well.

My headcanon is that we might assume the refit we see at the end of Into Darkness is supposed to be the Enterprise as we see her in Beyond. We only get a glimpse anyway so it's easy to write off any discrepancies.

Wow! Thanks for that!

They are indeed very different.

DISCO Connie is prettier than TOS Connie.

I know, it's a controversial take, but I prefer what John Eaves did to the classic TOS Connie and updated it for DISCO & SNW.

I don’t think that’s controversial. There are plenty of people that look at the Original Enterprise and go “ewwww 60’s it looks so cheap.”

If we are just ranking the Connies, I would place the Discoprise 3rd behind the TOS and Refit bit way ahead of the JJ-prise. Never been a big fan of that Enterprise design. Especially the A that we saw at the end of Beyond.

1. TOS Enterprise
2. TMP Enteprise
3. SNW Enterprise
4. Kelvin Enterprise(Beyond)
5. Kelvin Enterprise(Into Darkness)
6. Kelvin Enterprise(2009)

Not exactly ST but related to it, I didn't like Forbidden Planet, it's sometimes seen as a forgotten classic or the purest original form of ST, there is some influence but I think in itself it was kind of OK and ST from its start improved on it in pretty much every way.

I also think "Balance of Terror" was a lot better than its inspiration predecessor The Enemy Below.

I really like the Abramsverse Enterprise saucer, but then as it's clearly based more on the refit than the original that's perhaps not so surprising; it's just the rest of the design, and the absurd scale, that bother me. The Abramsverse Enterprises I always regarded as curate's eggs – there's bits of each of them I like, but there's bits of each of them I really hate. The overall impression for each of them is that the final design is ultimately unbalanced, and feels like they were trying too hard to make it "cool".

I think with an overall ranking I'd have to go with:

1) TMP-era refit/Enterprise-A
2) Discovery/Strange New Worlds
3) Phase II (I mean, it sort of counts, right?)
4) TOS
5) Abramsverse Beyond refit
6) Abramsverse 2009/Into Darkness

Not sure where to put the Abramsverse Enterprise-A, since we've seen it for all of 30 seconds, and I reckon that, like the ID/B refit, if we get a fourth movie in the franchise it'll be significantly tweaked anyway.

Balance of Terror made my top five for the season during my current rewatch, so I'm a bit of a fan. I definitely liked it more than Forbidden Planet, which I watched first for research. It wasn't bad and the robot was surprisingly awesome, but the film definitely got a bit distracted in the middle.

I also watched some Wagon Train and read some Hornblower for additional research (I was writing a thing about the different Trek series so I figured knowing things would help), and honestly they were better than I expected.

My connietroversial Connie rankings:
  1. Refit
  2. TOS
  3. Kelvin
  4. Disco/SNW
  5. Kelvin Beyond
  6. Kelvin A
I apologise for the lack of pictures.
No need for apologies, most of us regulars here knows what each one looks like, more or less.

For my rankings of Connies:
1) DISCO/SNW
2) Refit
3) Phase 2
4) TOS
5) Kelvin/JJ-verse variants

I love what Resurrected StarShips does, especially with his battle analysis series:

Star Trek 09 at the top, Star Trek Beyond at the bottom. The redesign makes it look like it's been filmed with a wide angle lens to make the vessel appear huge.

I prefer the Beyond NCC-1701 above all but the 2009 and Into Darkness version looked better re: the saucer. I don't care for there being so many windows and portholes on the rim of the Beyond version's saucer section.

Maybe a little. But, any CONSTITUTION class is better than the vast majority of ships in Trek.

TOS, KELVIN, Refit, and SNW, all of them top my lists.

Well, this is the controversial opinion thread. O didn't expect anyone to agree with me.
I partially Agree with you.

The Constitution Aesthetic is the classic design that started it all, so every StarShip that comes after does have to compare to the TOS Connie Aesthetic of Saucer, Neck(Optional), StarDrive section, Warp Nacelles on Pylons(Optional).

No they don't.

People definitely choose to but I don't reject ships because they are not like the Constitution. I reject them because they are ugly.
