What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Bah. I thought my Star Wars Lite comment would get more flames. Some valid points were made, thanks for bringing them to the table. Trek IMHO works best as a blend of action, character drama, commentary and a good dose of "don't take it too seriously it's pretend."

Can't really think of anything to throw out there that's not silly or an obvious attention-getter. so I have to go back to reading replies until I can think of something.

Because, as much as lots of people try to equate the two (I have for a number of years) they are not equal. One is largely fantasy but in space, while the other about our humanity specifically. It still is a fantasy but has more direct references to our current culture. Equating the two is common but not fully accurate.

I think of TMP as Trek's imperfect masterpiece. I like it, it's my favorite Star Trek film, but it deserves criticism.

The lack of conversation between Kirk and Scott during the Enterprise flyby is a good example of a major problem the film also has elsewhere. Just as when the Enterprise enters V'ger's cloud, the film simply indulges in spectacle, instead of advancing the story efficiently and effectively. Contrast these instances with Spock's spacewalk when he flies through the imaging chamber. In that segment, we have both spectacle and a monolog that advances the story in a significant way.

Flawed masterpiece is a great way to describe TMP. I think it's greatest flaw is a lack of warmth, rather than it's glacial pace. In TOS we always had an impression of bonhomie between the various principles and that's lost in TMP.

It's a visually stunning film though. Completely unique in the franchise and I can't wait to see it in 4K.

It does. This is not to take away from the beauty of the shots but a question of pacing.

How so? When in TOS did we get these long shots of the ship from every angle?

Except, characters are not shot like that. The equivalent would be Kirk walking on to the bridge and the camera covering his trip from the lift, around the left side of the bridge, around the right side, having a close up of his rank braid, and slowly rising shot as he sits in the chair, before focusing on his hands on the seat rests. Do other characters get treated like that?

Ok. this not me saying that an inspection is invalid. This is me saying the pacing of the shot, after being told of an emergency situation, is off putting. You can do an inspection without 5 minutes of film time, and probably even longer in universe time. It strains credulity.

Also, in general, to be extremely blunt to the point of rudeness the shot is beautiful. I am not saying the shot isn't beautiful. The music, the cinematography and everything is lovely. The Enterprise looks like a beautiful ship. But, in the context of the film it throws off the pacing, and diminishes the urgency of the emergency. That's all. That's my objection. People want beauty shots of ships, knock yourselves out.

It's in character of Kirk and Scotty because of their pride of the Enterprise. That's what I meant by past behavior. Scotty always was in love with the Enterprise, and Kirk said many times how much he adores her.

It's another reason why her destruction in STIII packs such a serious punch.

Trek has always been absolutely awful regarding biological sciences though. I don't think a single writing team has understood how DNA and evolution worked...like ever.

^^^^
This!!!

What one person calls "mindless," others might call "good, escapist fun."

I don't need or want to watch 2001, Inception, and Solaris every day. Sometimes I like to watch Transformers, Armageddon, and Independence Day.

...The animated Transformers movie, right? I mean, if you're saying fun...

Too soon. man.

Is it? We have no idea how long he was there...

This. While Star Trek's stance on physics often comes in for scrutiny, it seems happy putting any old biological or medical nonsense out there unchallenged. As a biologist I often find myself wincing. Bashir's early line "the DNA is breaking down into complex protein fragments" still haunts me to this day...

Try being a psychologist and watching Troi for all this time…

Only someone with Augmented intelligence can understand. ;)
