I can imagine it also comes from people's wish to see a fictional universe as "real", so everything must match and every discrepancy must be explained, no matter how far-fetched the explanation is.

Well I would say that any good fantasy and/or science fiction story does need grounding elements and a degree of "realism" to work. Any story does.

I get that things are to be somewhat realistic, which is why Trek usually got buy with not explaining everything. But, now, it seems fans want everything explained.
