What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

“A Night in Sickbay” really isn’t a terrible episode.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not great by any means but it’s not as bad as people make it out to be.

It's not as bad as "Precious Cargo" or "TATV..." I'll give it that.

Ah, two episodes I can never defend. One because it's just so damn difficult, while the other incurs such hatred from me I simply can't. Easy to figure out which is which...

It's not even close to the worst episode of TOS. I'm not even sure it's in the Bottom 5.

I’d say bottom 5 of TOS for me is:

Plato’s Stepchildren
Mudd’s Women
Turnabout Intruder
And The Children Shall Lead
Who Mourns for Adonais

I have episodes that are more commonly railed on, like
Way to Eden
Spock’s Brain
The Apple
The Alternative Factor

comfortably above those 5.

"And the Children Shall Lead" and "Catspaw" are much less entertaining and a far greater chore to sit through than "The Way to Eden."

I agree with Catspaw. That’s probably #6 for me...still below the others I’ve listed that are more commonly pooped on.

It tries to be a spooky Halloween episode for the series but even the Remastered cut of the episode could only do so much to make it better.

only redeeming stuff:

1. Cool USS Enterprise charm stuck in that acrylic cube
2. Kirk calling McCoy “Bones” and then quickly reverting to “Doc” when he realizes there is a skeleton right next to them.

Korob was kinda interesting but he had to play second fiddle to Sylvia and neither of them were as interesting as they could have been considering they were exotic aliens from another galaxy.

Oh, and Crewman Jackson falling off the transporter pad. THAT is a stunt I do not envy the stuntman for pulling off!

Their magic wand was admittedly cool as well.

In a horrifyingly bad way.

Yeah, I do give the producers credit for not using the typical elastic-sounding sound effect when objects are materialized with the transmuter. They went for something original. Shame it was an interesting sound effect in an episode that largely wasn't.

The aliens that turn into really lame puppets at the end of Catspaw... I mean, you can see the strings!!!
I don't think this is really controversial.

I agree that it's lame you can see the strings, but I give it a pass because it was made in 1967. "Yeah, but even in 1967!" Yeah, well, I wasn't even born yet. So, whatever. As long as they get the point across, it's okay as far as I'm concerned.

The Remastered version of the episode digitally erased the strings of the puppets. But yeah, they were clearly exotic miniature alien puppets on strings.

I think it was because his kid was one of the kids in the episode.
I suspect it was stunt casting—anything to get attention for the show—and they hired Belli's son Caesar to placate him.

Roddenberry apparently hated Belli's performance, writing to Freiberger about the rough cut:

Angel’s physical appearance doesn’t come off. What can we do? Voice? Are we planning to loop him with someone else?

Cut Beli’s [sic] lines in half all the way through script.

I think that's what they call a casus belli...:D
