What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

  • I am a fan of "Discovery," but will go down with the abbreviation "STD." Only in this fandom would such an obvious and hilarious abbreviation be shunned instead of embraced.
  • I ship Seven of Nine and Chakotay. Not that I'll tantrum if your fic doesn't, or if they broke up in canon. But done right, this couple could have been brilliant. Chak not only freed her from the Collective, but he's the most un-Borg person on Voyager. Science meets the spiritual!
  • "If anything happens to Porthos, I'll be the one watering their Holy Trees!" This is the one and only moment where I don't hate Archer. If only that show had been a comedy, with the lead character intentionally written as an incompetent lunatic plunging Earth into galactic war with his antics, I'd be a diehard fan.
  • I love Ezri Dax. I think she's adorable, and while I love Jadzia as well, they developed Ezri more in one season than they did with Jadzia in six.
  • I don't care for Boothby.

They didn't know what to do with Jadzia. They began with the notion that in Joined Trill, the symbiont personality is dominant. Then, about halfway through S2 of DS9, they decided to make the host dominant instead (which makes more sense, given the competition for symbionts; who would want to have their own personality overwritten?) and that changed Jadzia's character a lot.

“STD” does not work because I’ve never heard anyone ever call Voyager “STV”. It also immediately brings my hackles up because it’s used by THAT section of the fanbase as a juvenile insult.

Yeah, I've heard some unflattering opinions of it. It used to routinely be called bad or disappointing when I was younger. Season 3. Minimalist sets. Use of a bare budget. Etc.

Hmm. I know season 3 is generally regarded as less popular, and I guess "The Empath" fell into that.

I guess that's another unpopular opinion of mine because I actually liked season 3 quite a bit. The actors all seemed more comfortable in their roles and season 3 did have some of my favorite episodes like "That Which Survives", "Wink of an Eye", "Whom Gods Destroy", "Elaan of Troyius", "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" among several others. There were some gems in season 3.

And you know, I even liked "And the Children Shall Lead". One of my favorite lines is in that episode...."Death to you all, death to you all"

I agree with the Fry Ratio.

Back to controversial opinions...

Some episodes absolutely crap on a given character for entertainment value...

"A Night in Sickbay" - Archer. He wasn't the strongest captain in the series, but here he spends the whole night acting like a nine year old kid who needs a time-out.

"Let him who is Without Sin..." - Worf. He's gruff sometimes, but not totally incapable of enjoying himself.

"Take me out to the Holosuite" - Sisko. As someone who takes nothing but joy in baseball, he of all people should understand that it's for fun.

"Nightingale" - Harry. He's served under Janeway, Chakotay, and Tuvok, all of whom are exemplary commanders (though they have very different styles). Why would he just randomly forget the lessons he learned from them?
