What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

DS9 got Worf in S4, and he was kind of their game changer.

I've said it before, why am I saying it again?
Well, this is controversial opinions so....
I didn't like what Worf became in DS9.
He should have stayed as TNG character only.
I should not have written that, there's the inevitable "Worf became so much more in DS9" post coming?

I mean, he became different. I don't know if he became more. We just got to see a different side of him in terms of dealing with leadership.

I think Worf added an extra element and certainly didn't hurt, but Deep Space Nine already had the strongest ensemble of any Star Trek series, including the best cast of secondary/recurring characters outside of the ones who got their names in the credits. DS9 didn't need Worf as much as Worf needed DS9. It's not a Voyager/Seven of Nine situation.

DS9 did respect Worf in one way that TNG made a joke about him with.

In TNG, who was always getting his ass beat just to prove a threat is rough? Worf. More often than not, he was beaten, knocked out, have his wrist broken, shot, etc. than he was shown as what he was supposed to be... an effective warrior.

On DS9, he rarely lost a fight, because DS9 respected the fact that Worf was a trained warrior who practiced constantly and was strong.

I am not sure if anyone has ever pointed that out, but it's something I noticed during its first run.

The best option would probably be if Berman was fired/handed over the reins some time around 1994 or so.

Sounds about right. TNG and DS9 were strong, but VOY struggled.

My attitude toward VOY had actually been softened by a very insightful Youtube video I saw... it might have abandoned its premise, but by being episodic, it carved out its own niche. But it was sloppily handled, no excuse for that.

Not from me. Of course, I liked Worf very much as a DS9 character, but any time a character goes in a new direction, some people will prefer the old one.

Don't the shows reflect the immediate showrunners/producers more than Berman?

I mean he was in charge for the vaunted DS9. Maybe VOY is more the "fault" (and I liked VOY) of the network wanting TNG lite and the boots-on-the-ground producers.

Berman was more the overseer, yes?

He is rumored to have nixed several ideas that in many people's opinion would have made Voyager better.

Of course, he gave us 25 seasons of Trek in 18 years, and a lot of it was pretty good stuff. Berman-era Trek remains my favorite to this day. So whatever he might have screwed up, his accomplishments should be appreciated.

As with many people, it’s necessary to separate the creator from the product. Berman was sexist and homophobic by many accounts, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the Star Trek he made.

If anything, Roddenberry was way more of a shit than Berman ever was. That doesn’t stop me from enjoying TOS.

Hollywood is full of unpleasant people.

To Berman's credit, he is known to have run interference on some terrible ideas that the studio wanted - like to have a "boy band" present on ENT who would do a musical number in the mess hall every week in order to get teenage girls interested in the show.

That may be the absolute worst idea I've ever heard pushed by a studio for a Trek series or film. Sweet shit, that is so epically dumb that I wouldn't blame Berman and Braga if they never again spoke to that executive.

Of the 90s Trek, TNG is the undisputed leader in the "I physically can't sit through this episode" competition.

I have to be honest, I had a much easier time watching VOY recently (just finished watching the entire series) than I did TNG.

There were far fewer brilliant VOY episodes than there were brilliant TNG episodes...but there were very few boring as fuck VOY episodes.

And I can't do boring as fuck Star Trek. I just can't. And TNG can be boring as fuck.

There.......I said it.

It's not even the boring as fuck episodes. I can sit through a boring episode playing in the background, no problem. It's the absolute cringe ones. Remember when the Binars created that holographic fantasy woman for Riker? Or when Georgi created a holographic facsimile of a Leah Brahms, made out with her, and then the writers had the real Leah apologize to Georgi for being rightfully mad about it? Or the Kriosian in woman whose biology would force her to completely change herself, erasing her personality, desires, and dreams, in order to become some man's perfect mate? Honestly, I heard that last one and completely noped out of that episode.

I think that Berman was more focused on making profitable Trek than good Trek. That would explain both his decision to turn Voyager into TNG Lite (it's what a lot of viewers seemed to want), and his decision to avoid LGBT+ representation (he was worried that he might lose conservative viewers).

11001001: Didn't have much of a problem with that one. Though given that the holodeck obviously couldn't light Riker's fire on its own, I do wonder which Bynar was chatting him up. My money's on Zero Zero.

The Perfect Mate: Certainly an element of tragedy to this one. But the show was hardly glorifying it.

Galaxy's Child: Full agreement. Everything Geordi did in this episode was downright creepy.
