What are your 2 favorite Red Dwarf season 1-8 episodes and why ?

BDuncan

Lieutenant Junior Grade
What are currently your 2 or 3 personal favorite Red Dwarf season 1-8 episodes and please separately say why, for each fave episode named.

I don't think I'd be able to choose. I love most of them.
Probably Confidence and Paranoia, Marooned and The Inquisitor. But that'll be subject to change with the next set of lines that pop in to my head probably.

Quarantine is the first that come to my head, probably have to think about it for another two episodes.

Yeah, an incredibly hard question to answer.

I'm going to have to go for Me2, I really thought the whole Gazpacho soup gag was one of the funniest scenes on Red Dwarf, but at the same time it gave us a bit of an insight into Arnie's character and motivations.

Justice World, a great sci-fi concept, again Arnie centric, but the whole trial of Arnold Judas Rimmer was a riot as well.

And like Bob, i think The Inquisitor is one of the best episodes, another great sci-fi concept and also a good character piece for all 4 crew members. I think people underestimate the strength of the sci-fi in Red Dwarf at least in the first 6 series. It's thoroughly entertaining in that respect even when the gags are missing the mark.

Even having said they are my 3 favourites I nearly picked the two you did, also Quarantine would be up there too.

I think I like Confidence and Paranoia because it gives us early insight to all three of the main cast. Rimmer and his dislike of everything optimistic, and even his self hate. Lister and his "chirpy, gerbil faced optimism" and Cat's entire world view.

Marooned again is basically a big look in to Rimmer and Lister's characters and what makes them who they are.

Come to think of it, it seems all three have that same aspect to them.

I was going to say Quarantine and Gunmen of the apocalypse but then i remembered tikka to ride its so hard to choose.

The first one that popped into my head was Tikka to ride, imo after that the show never was as good as it used to be.
Off the top of my head I'd also choose the despair squid and future echoes

Definitely Queeg - anything giving Norman Lovett's Holly centre stage is going to be a highlight.

As to the other one, although there are some obvious candidates (like Back to Reality, Quarantine and Polymorph), I would probably choose Parallel Universe - another example of the series at its peak (it was never as good from Season 3 onwards when it turned from a sitcom in space to a sci-fi sitcom). And the astounding Tongue Tied opening the episode is the icing on the cake...

I agree. Series 1 and 2 were for me the best of the series, and I loved a lot of those episodes, such as Future Echoes, Confidence and Paranoia, and Me2.

Of the later episodes, Dimension Jump is still my favourite. That Ace Rimmer - what a guy...

Me too, series 1 and 2 are my favourite series. I love the later ones too but 1 and 2 just have some charm that's missing later.

Regardless of the series, I felt Red Dwarf was at its best when it focused on Rimmer baring his neurotic psyche.

I'd go with 1 and 2. Especially season 1. The show was a bit more personal in the beginning. Much of it was just Rimmer and Lister talking/arguing. You really felt how alone they were in the beginning.

As the show went on, it became more and more of a "normal" sci-fi series. Though I did continue to enjoy it.

I'd say my two favorite episodes are the pair that opens series seven: "Tikka to Ride" and "Stoke me a Clipper." But I'll give honorable mention to "Queeg," "Backwards," "Marooned," "Justice," "Back to Reality," "Gunmen of the Apocalypse," and "Cassandra."

That's tough. I'll have to narrow each series down before I even consider a current top 2-3:
I. Me2
II. Queeg ("We are talking jape of the decade. We are talking April, May, June, July and August fool.")
III. Polymorph ("well I can't say I'm totally surprised...")
IV. Dimension Jump
V. You know what? I can't put a single episode in series 5 above any of the others. All of them. Favourite series. For the sake of this though I'll say Quarantined, as I own my own Mr Flibble puppet :D
VI. Gunmen of the Apocalypse
VII. Tikka to Ride... with special mention to Blue for the Munchkin song
VIII. Krytie TV ("Time is a great healer. Unless you've got a rash, in which case you're better off with ointment")

Top three at the moment of those... I guess Gunmen, Quarantined and Holoship.

It's a tough one to answer - there are so many great eps. Two that spring to mind immediately are Justice & Quarantine.

Why is this in the TV & Media forum, BTW ?
