What are you reading?

I just finished listening to ‘Pet Sematary’ by Stephen King, narrated by William C Hall. This is the 11th Stephen King book I have read and I have yet to find one that I consider scary.

I stopped reading King a long time ago because I realized most of the characters were just not anyone I could care about.

I last read Farscape Forever! Sex, Drugs, and Killer Muppets edited by Glenn Yetteth

A few years ago, I started reading the Dark Tower series, but I only got half-way through "Wizard and Glass". Most of the book being Roland telling his backstory, it just felt like a total showstopper to me. From what we knew at this point, it was already clear after the first chapter set in Roland's youth where that story was going to end, and the longer it went on, the less interested I got. Seriously, this is a story that should have been a spin-off book, or limited to maybe a hundred pages within this book. So after about half of it, I just didn't care anymore, closed the book, and that was that.
I planned to read a summarizing of the book and then continuing with "Wolves of Calla", but I've not gotten around to it, yet. And now it's been a few years.

One of the reasons I started getting back into literary Conan is that the stories, even the novels, are relatively short one-offs. If I don't like a story, I don't have to read it to understand other Conan stories. I may be over the whole series-of-tomes-telling-one-big-story thing. I rather read something short which I actually fully enjoy reading. You know, reading not of a feeling of obligation, but just for my own enjoyment.

Which reminds me, I'm about half-way through Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian" Omnibus, with another collection of Robert Jordan's Conan novels waiting. You know, fun.

I am currently reading "Star Trek: The Next Generation: Encounter At Farpoint." (silver cover)

It's so much fun to go back and read these characters before they were firmly established in their personalities.

I also haven't read a scary King book.
Maybe because I have a dog I found Cujo have sad moments, but not really scary.

Does anybody have a good suggestion for a good scary book?

^^^ I would like recommendations for a real scary book as well as I did not find ‘Silence of the Lambs’ or ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ to be scary and I am not scared by vampire or zombie stories.

I finished The Expanse novella The Vital Abyss last night and started Nemesis Games this morning.

I am currently listening to The Kalahari Typing School for Men by Alexander McCall Smith, narrated by Adjoa Andoh. It is the 4th book in the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series.

This month I have listened to 5 Agatha Christie novels. This means I have listened to a total of 41 Christie books in the last 18 months.

My current paperback read is Aunt up the Cross by Robin Dalton. It is the story of the author’s childhood in Sydney in the 1920s and ‘30s surrounded by eccentric aunts and uncles.

12 Rules For Life by Jordan B. Peterson.

I have a dilemma, what book should I buy.
''Dragon Precinct'' or ''A Furnace Sealed''?
Both is not an option right now,
I love all of KRAD's Trek novels but I am not familiair with his other genre novels.

A funny sort of synchronicity - While listening to Heroes by Stephen Fry a few minutes ago, I heard him make mention of Carlo Rovelli’s Reality Is Not What It Seems, which I purchased via Audible just yesterday.

Finished Caliban’s War on Kindle recently. Currently reading What Is Real? by Adam Becker and Alpha God by Hector Garcia. Must get back to Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett soon, also.

Just finished Resurrection of the Romanovs: Anastasia, Anna Anderson and the World’s Greatest Royal Mystery by Greg Hunt and Penny Wilson.

The first part of the book tells about Anastasia’s life, the second part tells about Anna Anderson from the time she was pulled from a canal in Berlin, how she came to claim she was Anastasia, and looks at who believed her story and who didn’t and why they believed what they did, and this part ends with Anna’s death, the third part of the book deals with the recovery of the Romanov bodies, DNA testing and more modern forensic examination of photos etc.

I think the story of Anastasia herself is better covered in Four Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Romanov Grand Duchesses by Helen Rappaport but the sections about Anna Anderson, and the info on the later investigations were very well researched and interesting.

Finished A Column of Fire by Ken Follett. As far as historical fiction goes, it was pretty good. But as part of the Kingsbridge series, it's disappointing in the sense that while the first two books are very central to Kingsbridge, in this one it features very little to the point I wondered why it was a Kingsbridge novel. It felt more like a spinoff. But in terms of historical context, it makes total sense that characters would be spread out more internationally in that time period. There's a hook at the end leaving a future book to be set in the new world, but I'd actually prefer a prequel about the founding of Kingsbridge.

Now reading The Lost City of the Monkey God by Douglas Preston. Nonfiction about a legendary archeological find in the Honduran rainforest that had been cursed for centuries. Would make for good Indiana Jones material.

Speaking of massive books, Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich by William L. Shirer - a 20th century masterpiece. For the umpteenth time.

At my daughter's request, I am reading The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George. So far, I'm enjoying it.
