What are you least favorite Star Trek novels?

And I was a bit disappointed that "The Buried Age" didn't manage to pull me in - I stopped at around page 100. The same goes for "Sword of Damocles", unfortunately.

Rats! That means you missed the chapter I devoted to Deltan butter orgies.

Have to remember to put that kind of stuff in Chapter One from now on.

What I hated about Before Dishonor was the complete lack of emotional impact in Janeway's death. Here's a character I have spent years admiring and she dies and I was just like.. hurry and finish this book, it's terrible. I would have not minded her death if it had been done well and made me cry instead of being just one more piece of drek in an already awful book.

So yeah that is definitely in my top 3 worst Trek books.

I'd like to know what went on in the mind of the editor to make the decision to kill off Janeway. It really didn't serve any purpose that I can see.

It served to cause long running angst for Chakotay. Long running angst is VERY important as it takes the place of actual relationships in much of Star Trek.

Well, the editor has commented on the decision a few times in the past.

IIRC, there's been a discussion or two about it somewhere around here.

Did he/she actually say why they decided on killing her off? I haven't kept up with every post in every thread, I just don't have the time, so I would appreciate a link to the thread or at least the Cliff Notes version.

Me too.

I don't have any interest in digging through those threads, either, or the time to do anyone's homework, but there's one thing I remember someone saying (I don't remember who said it, so it may just have been someone guessing at the motivations, not someone involved in making the decision).

The problem started when Nemesis established that Janeway had become an admiral. That meant she was no longer going to be part of a happy little Voyager gang, because she'd moved on. It'd be harder to come up with stories in which she had a legitimate reason to be part of the action along with the rest of the gang. So, if she was being effectively cut off from the other core characters, why not do something that cut her off from the characters and would generate some emotional and dramatic stories?

See: omelet, breaking eggs.
Why could she not have been Chakotay's direct superior, like Nechayev was for Picard. She could have been in every story giving Chakotay his assignment, or been his go-to Admiral for questions, and could also have had her own plotlines which occasionally intersect. It was short-sighted to kill her off and although it has provided emotional impact for the crew (most noticeably Chakotay) I think that with more thought it wouldn't have been necessary at all.

^This argument has been conducted many times already. And that in itself is perhaps the best answer to the question of why Janeway was killed -- because it got people talking about the books.

Why not just put a few orgies in the middle of some trade paperback tome, it would do the same thing.

They killed Janeway because they thought it would make for a good story.

That's it.

Well sure, eventually. But I'd bet it won't be for at least 4 or 5 more books, and when she does return, she doesn't go back to being Captain of Voyager. When they bring her back, they'll have something more interesting in mind.

I have never been able to finish a Michael Jan Friedman book. I'm not critising his books as I know some have been highly rated, but I just don't like his writing style.
I hate the later Diane Carey books. She has a great love of sailing and seems to want all the characters to as well. This ruined Ship Of The Line for me because I liked the concept.
By the way, I loved Well Of Souls.
