What are these things for??

In "Relics" Scotty asks Geordi about one of the black panels on the wall saying, "Is that a conduit interface?" as some non-comm walks off and leaves the damn thing on!

Anyway, seems to me that's what those black panels could be they let your interact with/check the status of whatever pipes and mechanics are behind the wall there, I vaugely still remember seeing the little nobodys in the background doing things on them but, in the end, I suspect they're nothing more than just fancy-looking alert indicators.

Riker was also shown by a random Ensign (who is possibly the shortest person ever to be in Starfleet) how to use the alledged conduit interface in "Encounter at Farpoint". The whole panel along the corridor then lit up showing him how to get to the Holodeck.

Yeah, that was at the same time the computer almost hit on him...and said ensign watched his ass as he walked away.

That God that was the last time we saw that.

I liked that bit. It was very casual and you'd almost miss it if you weren't looking for it.

Always thought that feature of the Enterprise control panels was pretty neat. The vast volumes of the Enterprise's interior space would probably mean easily getting lost. It's pretty cool that you could simply touch a panel and Majel Majel will tell you how to get where you're going.

Ummm...that wasn't a "random ensign," it was Susan Sackett. And if you don't know who she is, a little research here and on the Web in general will help you out.

Anyway, that's just an annoying nitpick from me...sorry. Actually, all of those panels in the ship were supposed to be generic computer interfaces, accessible by touch and/or voice.

Doug

Ummm... sure it was Susan Sackett, but on the ship she was a no one. Just a "random ensign."

Didn't it light up when someone walked through that was horny? I thought I read that in the ST: TNG Testicle ...I mean ... Technical Manual
