I'm inclined to think that holographic interfaces were around long before the founding of the Federation, but they were even less durable than the circuit breakers on a starship bridge console.
Maybe there were more advanced interface systems in use in private homes and business offices, but LCARS was long favored for deep-space operations for being more rugged and less likely to completely go out during a systems failure. In such a case, that philosophy of "dependability-over-sophistication" may have been shared by the Klingons, the Romulans, etc.
