Just rewatched Voyager's the Raven. It features the B'omar, a race that shows a self-confidence that seems to far exceed their actual abilities. On top of that, they're wearing costumes like these:

This got me wondering. Which race(s) would you consider to have the silliest outfit(s) in all of trek?

    And you win.

And all the more so because they're supposed to be race of fierce warriors.

No, no, no...the men of Elas (Elaan of Troyius) have the most ridiculous outfits in Trek history!

I understand that the intent was to try to imagine possible future fashions based upon general long-term trends in late 20th Century Western costume, but most of the civilian fashions worn by 24th Century Humans were just atrocious.

I can forgive a lot of seemingly silly fashion concepts for alien cultures, because I can just assume that there are practices and cues within that fictional culture that would normalize their costumes if we were part of that fictional culture. But it's just harder to suspend disbelief with fictional future Human clothes. I think Babylon 5 did it better.

    There's two possibilities:
    1. It's the Delta Quadrant equivalent of the 'tinfoil hat'.
    2. He's a Space Umpire.

Sure. Perhaps I should have phrased the topic "which outfit looks silliest to you as an unprepared early 21st century viewer", or something like that. Didn't mean those costumes would be silly in-universe for that race.

Perhaps, perhaps not. But fashion takes unexpected turns. For example, I'm not sure what I would think of all those obviously fake white wigs from the 18th century if I'd never seen them before in history books or on paintings or such.

If by silliest you mean the least probable then the least probable costumes are the future Earth Human costumes that look so much like 20th century Earth Human costumes despite centuries of fashion change.

But if by silliest you mean the costumes that look the strangest to a typical 21st century Earth Human don't ask me I don't have the faintest idea.

The people that lived in the asteroid ship in For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky. The general population's clothes looked like ugly plaids to me if I recall correctly.

Also, why did Mrs. Troi always have to be wearing what looked like formal evening wear all the time?

Remember the helmets that the Vulcan workers were wearing in Star Trek 4 when they were helping get the stolen Klingon ship ready for take-off?

That's Lwaxana for you. She is so flashy and outgoing that she really does like to dress to the nines everywhere she goes.

Strangest costumes from a functional standpoint is probably Starfleet uniforms.

Officers who must be equally prepared for combat or scientific research and they wear bright colors with no pockets or protection from phaser fire or extreme weather.

Yep, that was at the forefront of my mind. Also Nona from A Private Little War wasn't the wildest but always distracted me.

The men are contenders, but Elaan's outfits balance it out!
