What a difference four years makes ...

Just stumbled on an old thread about Berman's announcement regarding a prequel.

TrekToday said:
Star Trek producer Rick Berman today revealed he has started work on what could eventually become Star Trek XI.

"I am involved in the very early stages of what could be the next Star Trek movie," Berman told the British Dreamwatch Magazine (via TrekWeb). "It's something I will be producing with two other producers."

Berman was unwilling to reveal anything about the film's plot beyond saying the film would be "a prequel." This fits in with comments over the past few months from several Next Generation actors, who felt that the disappointing box office results of Star Trek: Nemesis spelled the end of TNG as a film franchise. Of course, discussions fo the next Trek movie project are still in the very early stages, and the concept may yet change entirely.

In addition to the next Trek film, Berman revealed to Dreamwatch magazine that he is currently working with fellow Star Trek: Enterprise creator Brannon Braga on a science fiction series set outside the Trek universe. Trekweb speculated that if project would indeed be picked up by studio Paramount for development as a full-fledged series, Berman and/or Braga might play a reduced role in Enterprise's fourth season.

The full comments from Berman can be found in issue #117 of Dreamwatch magazine, on sale now in the UK. Thanks go out to TrekWeb for this!

I hated that idea. I'm absolutely delighted about the upcoming prequel. There's a lot of skepticism about the new film, but this old thread reflects a feeling that people would rather see no new Trek as opposed to another Berman-produced movie. I just thought it interesting how thoughts of Trek's future are so much brighter now than they were then.

The bigest differance is that we don't have Rick to kick around anymore.

However that doesn't mean jack, everyone who was ragging on him is ragging on JJ instead, instead of giving JJ his FIRST chance even to prove himself.

Guilty before proven innocent it seems.

* meh *

The idea behind Star Trek: The Beginning (Eric Jenderson I think) had me interested but I'm very happy with what we're getting, whatever that is.

I never cared for the name of the hero of this script. Tiberius Chase? Honestly, I'm glad it was canned. To me the crews of Enterprise, Columbia and other Earth Starfleet ships should've been involved with Archer the most prominent character in the Romulan War. In sense, he was ready for that... being a veteran of alien skirmishes with the Xindi, Suliban, Klingons and the rest. Hints from "Shockwave, Part II" and Season Four's Andorian/Romulan trilogy, further the case for his involvement. Back on Earth, Starfleet must've thought the NX-01 was just out there causing trouble.

Probably a good idea to shift this thread to The Movies forum, since it thankfully bears no relation to the real eleventh feature-film.

Jendressen's script idea seemed pretty silly to me. It's surprising, considering that he was a Band of Brothers scribe. According to him, Berman's involvement with the film was strictly a formality, and the project was killed with all that management turnover.

Classic.

If he does well, I'll give him credit. If not, I'll be critical. ;)

There was one bit in that script that made me pause and go... "Huh. That's neat":

"I will still, and forever, wonder how one can go boldly and follow at the same time."

- Tiberius Chase (Star Trek: The Beginning)

But it really wouldn't have been a good movie. In other news, has it seriously been four years, or are you generously rounding? If so, I'm getting old.

Time has indeed made a significant difference.

I don't know if the fandom has become more open minded or if certain purists have simply died off but I distinctly recall there being an overwhelmingly negative response to the very concept of recasting TOS a few short years ago. The same attitude seemed prevalent when discussing updating the visual effects of TOS, with purists lamenting the Lucas-izing of Trek. The respectfully restrained remastering of the series seems to have changed minds there. Likewise there are definitely more Trekkies on this board supporting the notion of not only recasting but reimagining Trek from scratch.

It's been very refreshing, I must say.

As Zeppster noted, that was April of 2004. And I feel your pain.

Humm...interesting.

Well, all I can say is that I'm glad we have fresh blood running the show now. :)

Has it really been nearly 4 years now ?
My, how time flies.
Seems like only yesterday that Rick Berman was fired.

* No random thought here as it seems to upset some people *
