Wesley's Second Season "Uniform."

First-season Wesley wore, of course, some ridiculous looking civilian togs. As the second season opened, he now wore an odd gray jumpsuit which kind of looked like a uniform. However, we never saw anyone else wear an outfit like that, aside from (vaguely) Picard's black-and-grey tunic that he wore under his black-and-red "captain's jacket."

What do you all make of it? Special "acting ensign" uniform? One-off uniform just for Wesley? Myself, I was hoping they'd use it at Starfleet Academy as a cadet outfit. Of course, they had a different uniform for the cadets when they finally showed them.

I'd always assumed it was a one-off piece of clothing, more likely from his own personal wardrobe than anything Starfleet recommended. Something civilian, but smart enough for duty.

Just at a tangent - am I right in thinking (for the second season at least), his commbadge was different to regular crew's in that it had a silver oval rather than a gold one? Just another thing to set him apart from official Starfleet staff?

I always assumed that the rank "Acting Ensign" was unique to Wesley across Starfleet. You're either a Cadet or an Ensign; it was only the Traveller's advice that inspired Picard to come up with the idea of an "acting" Ensign; therefore, a "unique" uniform was also devised for Wes to wear on ship.

It was better than that fruity looking rainbow uniform he had around the second half of S1.

I think I blocked all memory of that rainbow thing out until this thread popped up... Now that one I do believe was probably civilian, like a kid's version of a uniform or something.

As for the rank of Acting Ensign, I postulate Roddenberry took it from the old Royal Navy rank of Acting Lieutenant and/or military parlance for any "Acting" rank (or Brevet) wherein a commissioned officer or non-com assumes the title and privilege of a higher rank/rate but for a unspecified temporary period.

In Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, Hornblower is made an Acting Lieutenant before he takes his Lieutenant's exam.

It would've been interesting had TNG showed more of these "Acting Ensigns" especially considering that there were several academy candidates on board the Enterprise ("Coming of Age").

An interesting bit about the uniform he wore: Season Two costume designer Durinda Rice Wood stated in a Star Trek: The Magazine (the Paramount publication run) interview that had she been the one to redesign the standard Starfleet uniform, she'd have patterned them more along the lines of the one she designed for Wesley.

Yeah, it is. Every time I watch a 2nd season ep and see those little flaps, I get a bit irritated. Was velcro outlawed by the 24th century?

Not that I recall. Unfortunately, I no longer have that issue. Wood did, however, state that she used a lot of fashion runway show items as inspiration for her 24th century costumes.

But we saw a cadet uniform in season three and it looked similar to the DS9 jumpsuit uniform.

I always figured that the uniform was meant to designate people who were affiliated with Starfleet, but who were not regular members (but unlike civilians, who were not a part of Starfleet at all and who were working on Starfleet installations under some other sort of agreement). I guess the best analogy would be civilian workers for a police department or military-they have an attachment to the military/dept and a direct employment agreement, unlike, for example, the civilian contractors that form their food service and maintenance staffs.

Despite this, I will say that I love Wesley Crusher. I would totally marry him. No matter his ass or his terrible choice in clothing.
