What's your opinion of him? Is he really that disliked by fans as it is stated everywhere?

Granted, he can be less compelling in the Wunderkind role on occasions, but not as much that would make him insufferable.

I thought he was OK after Evolution and before Journey's End, when he was depowered to the level of a budding genius, but not so depowered that he was doing something so monumentally stupid that it was out of character. Outside those limits I was pretty upset, for one reason or another.

Wil had this great line on the Guild recently that could have been apropos in so many episodes of TNG... "Oh.. My ..God!? Are you skullfucking me?"

As a 12 year old, he held down Jack Bauer at gun point.

they really dropping the ball on tapping Weaton's potential

That's the truth. I'd like to add that the dialog improved. I don't think they could write for Wes until season three. Listen to some of the weird shit that he says early on in the show. Everything that comes out of his mouth in Justice is unbearable. But by Final Mission (ironically) he was flushed out as a character and starting to fit.

I'm pretty sure McGyver showed us exactly how every week for 8 years.

Sometimes it was engineering, the forces of nature, or electricity, but mostly chemistry.

Agreed. After "Evolution" he was actually an interesting character and had plenty of good moments. One of the dumbest things his character does before them come in "The Naked Now" when he's able to, while "drunk" on the Psi 2000 intoxicant, "See the circuits in his head" and reprogram the tractor beam into a repulsor beam in moments. A task that the chief engineer says would take "weeks of laying out new circuits."

That's. Just. Dumb!

After evolution he was a simply a normal "boy genius" or maybe not to out of line for a normal teen going into the SFA.

Then Journey's End comes and he's just a punk, given magical powers and then he goes off to ride on rainbows with a man who's probably on the galaxy's sex-offender registry.

He was more interesting than Harry Kim and Travis Mayweather.

Can't complain, I like to make fun of the character once in a while but I never hated him.

If it weren't for him I wouldn't be able to call Beverly a milf. That's about the extent of his likeability in my book

I didn't think he was that bad. I actually liked how they closed out his story in "Journey's End." It was one of the few character-related stories that truly came full-circle in the series. However, I didn't like the fact that the end of his story was at least partially reversed by his appearance as a Starfleet officer in "Nemesis."

horrible concept. Kid supergenius who gets special treatment because some alien being says he's awesome and because the captain wants to get into his mom's pants.

He was tolerable in small doses in the background, but overall he was a terrible character. Jake Sisko is a child character done right.

I never really had a problem with Wesley. He might have been written a little TOO innocent and naive early on, but I still frankly preferred his episodes to most of the Troi and Geordi ones.

Although I do think he got more interesting once he actually LEFT the ship. Final Mission, First Duty, The Game, and Journey's End were all much better than anything that came beforehand.

I never had a problem with Wes. He is far from my favorite, but he was okay. Its possible that I gave him a bit of a pass because I really did like W.W. in Stand By Me.

Yup. Wesley suffers from being hyper competent past believability, whereas Jake was a much more natural. Too bad Wesley was the one who kept being pushed on us, and Jake faded to the background.

Jake was just a real person. They did a great job with him as a kid, a teenager and in the end a young man. Very believable and relatable and having a real kid growing up was used very well to show us the family side of Sisko.

I never really got the love for Jake. Yeah he came across much more like a real kid... but he was also very bland and uninteresting. Not to mention meek and wimpy and a little TOO attached to his dad.

It's a shame the writers couldn't let him be a bit more rebellious, or have more of an attitude-- you know, like a real teenager.

Humans have evolved! They don't have teenagers like that any more! They live to better themselves!
