Went To The Comic Con Today. Things Have Changed Since The Old Days?

Re: Went To The Comic Con Today. Things Have Changed Since The Old Day

I tend to avoid festivals or conventions in general because of the ginormous crowds and everything being commercialized and overpriced. I think that's just par for the course whether it has to do with comics, books, sci-fi, music/records, cultural performances, or even the local State fair!

I do think it's a little unfair to have an elitist "us vs. them" mentality toward newer fans who are getting into the comics because of the movies. Movies and TV shows have always had a broader general appeal than comic books. How many people became X-Men fans because of the cartoon series in the 90s? Or, how many people got into Batman because of the Tim Burton movie?

Though maybe my opinion doesn't count for much... I'm not really a comic collector or fan. My dad went through a phase as a "collector" when I was a kid, and that seriously turned me off of the whole thing. I treat comics like any other book. If I am interested in a comic book, I want to actually read it because I find that particular story or art appealing, instead of obtaining every last issue and keeping it in pristine storage to hopefully accumulate monetary value eighty years from now. So I prefer collected editions (hardback or paperback) that I can re-read like any other book. And if they are available as a collection of PDFs on DVD-ROM, so much the better!

Also, like any other company, a comic book publisher must focus on profitability to survive; and a huge part of that is getting new fans in any way possible. Without new consumers, the industry will die!

Comic books themselves are a niche product. The publisher makes money in a variety of ways, such as from movie/TV show licensing; marketing tie-ins for toys, stickers, stationery, breakfast cereals, etc.; selling advertising space in the comics... oh, and distributing new issues. The publisher does not make a direct profit if I only collect their back-issues from 1953 from my local corner comics shop, but I never buy any newly-published issues. But the publisher can keep releasing new "limited editions" or whatever, to appeal to the collectors' market, and, more importantly, as another way for new fans to believe they are getting something special.

To keep afloat and profitable, comic shop owners and other vendors who participate in conventions must also try to have as broad of an appeal as possible.

And I guess that's enough of my rambling for now, lol.

I don't mean to be elitist Kor its just that some of the newbies got real annoying. Maybe I am just getting old. :)

That a pretty cool new Kor avatar btw.

^But everyone who attends a con was/is at one point a Newbie. As for some attendees being annoying, the simple fact is that we all find some people more annoying than others.

And I've attended cons from a few hundred up to the tens of thousands, and volunteered to help at at cons. These days I mainly go to catch up with friends in person who I only really see at this events.

I'm not big on crowds either, but I find the cons fun to go to just to see the various things around the place, the various items and the celebrity guests.

Well the crowds were so big this year that walking you felt as if you were being crushed. Some moron sneezed right behind me while I was waiting to get some food and wiped the snot on his pants while he was standing inches from me. He wasn't a kid mind you but a adult with a long white beard. Pretty disgusting. Ruined my appetite.

Really, lost your appetite? That's the first time you've seen an adult human being sneeze, wipe their nose with their hand, and then wipe their hand on the clothes? You realize that has nothing to do with comic-con and that slobs, or just people in general, do this kind of thing everywhere, right?

Like I said since it was so crowded there was nowhere for me to go. I probably got some of his snot on my shirt for all I know. That's just how close the moron was standing to me. I tried to move away but there just wasn't any room. I was trapped next to a disgusting jerk.

Well similar to what MacLeod said, everybody was a newbie at some point. And if we ourselves become interested in something that's new to us (a particular TV or movie franchise, a series of books, vinyl records, etc), then we are a newbie to that thing, and it's discouraging if long-time aficionados aren't welcoming because we don't understand the whole history and how things work, and we don't share their preferences. I.e. I wonder how many fans of the Hunger Games books look down on the movie-only fans, and are in a tizzy over the differences from the novels.

And thanks for noticing the avatar. :D It happens to be from a comic book! IDW's "Klingons: Blood Will Tell."

Anyone who thinks the good old days were pre-2008 is a newbie! ( to me ;) )

I have been going to cons for many years and they have just recently (after 2008) been over filled with people. Of course its fun when people are there but not when there are so many you can barely walk.

I will be going to Wizard Con in Chicago this year for the first time ever. I am so excited for it.

I have never been to a Wizard Con and am not sure if they have them where I live. Are they smalller than the Comic Con?

I remember the good old days when people didn't dress in silly costumes. Those silly costumes really destroyed the cons for me. How I miss the good old days.

I've never been, so I can't speak to the size. I don't think we get the normal Comic Con in Chicago, though. We have Wizard Con and C2E2.

A lot can be summed up and solved in the words of Admiral James T. Kirk:
"Come, come, Scotty. Young minds, fresh ideas. Be tolerant. " :)
