Well it's certainly a day from h3ll

Well, that's good news for your Dad. Your cousin got a raw deal, but at least he's alive.

That's a pretty messed-up story about your Uncle, though; I hope everything turns out to be okay.

Anyone want to trade days. In the last 4 hours:

-- My father was taken to the hospital with chest pain, and they found out he needs emergency heart surgery right now.

-- I was told by my mother not to come up there (long story)

And yes I'm online cause I've been told to keep my nose out of "family" business.
Then why is your mother there? She isn't a blood relative of your father like you are. You should be telling her to keep out of your family business.

See how she likes it.

-- Doc called and it looks like they're thinking of letting Dad come home either later today or earlier Wendsday depending on a couple of different factors but so far he's doing good or better than expected. The big factors is diet education and getting him to accept he can't eat like he used too, and stress management education; both things he's having problems with. Still off work 6 to 8 weeks.

-- Uncle: found. He was with his ex-wife. Cousin was pulling a prank and is pissed at people for being pissed at him; we should all get a sense of humor in his opinion.

Good lord! Glad your Dad might be coming home..but it sounds like your cousin needs a serious reality check. IMO, your cousin is acting like a spoiled child and needs a spanking so to speak. And the thing with your Uncle is crazy as well..wow, you could have your own soap opera if you wanted to! :) You could call it "Days of Our Lives-Next Generation". kidding! :D

Glad to hear things are looking a little better. Im terribly sorry for your cousin who lost his leg and the other foot. :( must be horrible for all involved.

But your other cousin, with the uncle joke. If it was my family, he would have suffered my wrath, and Im not sure I could be civilized.

Well someone's going out today to "talk" to my cousin about his joke.

Be honest, the adrenaline's wearing off, and I'm about to crash pretty hard-- bed at 5am up at 7am, can't do those days like I used too. And mom's already apologizing and so is the other family, passing it off as "We were just scared". Honestly, I'm too beat to argue the point right now

TGS, glad to hear that almost everything is working out within your family. Sorry the cousin and the infection not having a better prognosis.

It sounds to me like you navigated the family maelstrom of silliness wonderfully. My compliments. That's never an easy thing to do at any age or maturity level.

You did a better job that I would've TGS. I'd have exploded repeatedly.

I've learned in this family that exploding is what they want: "Oh, see, see! Right there, you're proving my point!". They see someone getting mad and blowing up at them as proof that they're right; no matter if it's their fault or not. Drives them more crazy just to walk away.

Yeah, file that one under "fights I'm never going to win, so I'm not going to start"

Hope things settle down a bit now - may you have a few quiet days :)

That's great. Glad to hear it.

-- Uncle: found.
That's good. I was a little worried about that.

How's your cousin doing so far?

Not to good. Pain medication isn't working, he's going bat shit crazy whenever they take him off sedation, and they're talking about taking his other leg now due to complications. Whenever he's let off sedation he's trying to claw off the bandages and he was screaming so loud today and begging for them to kill him, that they had to knock him out cause the other patients on the floor were starting to get freaked. Last I heard he's still out.

They think it was a strain of staph infection that he picked up on a job site.

Dad would have got to come home had he not told the Doc the first thing was going to do was got to McDonalds, so now he's there till they go over the new diet requirements again.

^^ Your Dad sounds like me.

Very sorry about your cousin. That sounds horrifying. I hope they can get all this under control soon. :(

TGS, still thinking of you guys.

Sorry about the cousin's pain. Rough stuff.

Your dad sound a bit like my husband, after this latest bout (just got home from 10 days in hospital, heart mostly) he may have gotten the message on diet.

Wishing you all all the best.

(and that the other cousin grows up)

I would have hit him over the head with a newspaper... they are never gonna let him out :D

Well today's been a crash course in employment/insurance regulations.

-- Dad qualifies for FMLA and his company can't touch him for 12 weeks-- unpaid. Maybe longer since they [the company] offer up to 12 months of PAID medical leave for drivers who are under doctor's supervision. Now once he's clear of the doctor, there's nothing to stop them from cutting him for "No cause" as TN is an "at will" state after 6 weeks back at work.

Dad STILL arguing about his diet and them telling him he has 6 to 8 weeks before he can recertified, and then only if he drops "X" amount of pounds and shows good life-style modifications (no salt, no sugar, grilled/baked food, whole grain breads, no caffeine). And he's fricking trying to figure out how to cheat. So he might be up there ANOTHER night seeing they don't want him to leave till he gets it in his head: this was the warning, shut up, lose the weight, and quit eating crap.

Sounds like my dad.

He got a stomach bypass (don't know the english term.. they put a rubber band around the stomach to artificially reduce it and thus reduce the amount of food you can take in).

At first he lost weight fast.. about 20kg in a few weeks. Then he found ways to circumvent that and now, a few years later, he's fatter than ever.

Bring it up he finds all kinds of excuses (I'm sick!!! is the favorite) and if you press the matter he blows up like bomb and you have a full blown heated argument.

To be honest.. my mom and me have given up. There's nothing we can do to change his mind and "re-educate" him about diet.

I wish you all the luck to "save" your dad.. it sounds like he has it even worse than my dad who didn't have to be hospitalized (yet).. do all you can to change him (very hard at that age to change the lifestyle).

As to your cousin with the prank.. words fail me.

I'm still recovering from Pleco's advice to steal a lawn tractor. I'm truly sorry for your troubles but that was just so funny.

I think the term is either "Gastric Bypass" or "Lapband" surgery. But I've heard that with gastric bypass you can only eat a small amount of food. How is he able to eat a big amount without getting severely sick and throwing up?
