TNG in the first 2 seasons was too much like Star Trek and was creamed for it.
I'd agree here, it was a LOT like TOS (especially season 1) and did get creamed for it, and deservedly so. Of course, at the time, there was nothing else, so it was an easy comparison to make. I'm glad that happened, though, it forced them to give TNG its own identity, which led to it being a much better series, IMO.
DS9 in the first season was too much like TNG and got creamed for it.
I never really heard that much, but at that point there weren't many communities like this, I was just talking to a few friends. I didn't care that much for DS9 originally, but I got into it later, about the third season.
Voyager, while a decent series was too much like TNG and is getting crapped on because of it.
I'd beg to differ here. Voyager is getting crapped on because its premise was flawed, a lot of the stories were just as badly written as Enterprise, and it had nothing new to offer. It certainly never reached anything close to TNG.
The reason series like TNG and DS9 were so great was because while they were in the trek universe, they were thier own unique series that developed it's own characters and own ideas/plots.
Well.... TNG had its own unique characters, sure, but I think great writing made it good sci-fi, though episodic. There were few recurring plots, and even those were only occasionally dealt with (things like Data's heritage and family, Troi's mother, etc). DS9 broke the mold from Star Trek and created a storyline, a drama, with recurring storylines that you saw every week, or at least every couple of weeks. That's what made it so great, and so unique.
Now we have Enterprise, which is not allowed to have a unique identity because it has to tie in to the original. It got crapped on for being too much like Voyager, and now people love it like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread because it's trying to be like the original.
It was compared to Voyager, I think, because of the "eye candy" that became prominent in the last seasons of Voyager and in the first couple of seasons of Enterprise. Also, the writing of Enterprise was reminiscent of Voyager, to me. Taking after the original isn't a bad thing, and an upgrade in comparison, at least.
I see contradiction here and I'm a bit confused. In a way, it's really appropriate that These are the Voyages will have some TNG members in it. ENT was never allowed to be it's own series so it really doesn't deserve it's own finale.
I think Enterprise had its chance to be its own series, but failed due to poor writing, not due to comparisons to other series. All of the other series were compared, as you just said, and yet somehow overcame in their second or third season (except Voyager, I'd argue, but I'm a wee bit anti-Voyager, can you tell?). Enterprise doesn't have much of an excuse at this point. I've heard numerous times that season four was better, but I'd have to say too little, too late.
As for the crossover with TNG, I don't believe it's appropriate at all, and I feel for the Enterprise fans on that. I'm not going to say I like the show, but the people who do watch the show deserve an ending with the characters they've loved for four years, not with TNG characters at the center of the plot. If they wanted to do a crossover, they should've done it some other time than the season finale, IMO.
But then, that's just me.
