weighting of the JJverse

Is there a NuLost in Space sequel in the works?

There WAS one in development, but it gave way to John Woo's interest in a TV restart. They put everything into that, and it apparently was an unwatchable dud, so that put plenty of nails in the thing ... at least until some executive realizes they haven't rebooted LiS lately and starts the whole thing all over again.

Good Lord.. John Woo? Lost In Space??

I think we all dodged a bullet there.

It wasn't all for nothing. I just looked on wiki and they say that the Woo LiS sets were bought by BSG for use as the PEGASUS. Wish to hell somebody had reused EVENT HORIZON's sets and miniatures, I'd've loved to see a good movie within those environments.

You don't accept it so what's your point?

When did I say that? I accept it just fine. I don't tend to like it... but there's lots of crap in Trek over the years that I don't like. I just consider the movie stupid and superficial... It's the behaviour of its rabid supporters that I don't like.

And explain how Chekov is older than Kirk when he clearly states he's 17 and Kirk is at least 25?

Did he? I thought he was older than that. (Maybe confusion with the actors... or the morphine was kicking in.)

Agreed..though I thought Event Horizon had its fleeting moments..

When was Chekov ever older than Kirk? In both continuities Kirk was born 2233, and Memory Alpha gives Chekov's birthday as 2245 and 2241 in TOS and XI, respectively.

Edit: I see I am apparently snail-slow.

The actors are actually around the same age, give or take, but Chekov was considered to be in his 20s during the TOS era. Since Nero's corruption of the timeline puts the crew onto the ship about 8 years earlier, the ages of the younger crew and their differences still seem fairly consistent with the TOS universe.

SOMEthing happened to change this Chekov's age, relative to Kirk's. In TOS, Kirk is 34 when Chekov comes on (DEADLY YEARS), and Chekov is 22 as I recall. So unless THIS abramsKirk is already pushing 30, something happened to delay the Russian's birth a few years.

oh, I guess they already covered this, nevermind.

I don't remember Chekov's age being mentioned at all in the series, though I may be wrong.. I do recall Kirk saying he was 34 in that episode.

In the new movie, Kirk is 25 when he's on the ship. The proof is that Kirk is born on the Kelvin and that Nero states he's been waiting for Spock to come out of the black hole for 25 years.

Since Nero's presence already alters the timeline, it is very possible Chekov's birthyear could be different.

Or Nero's just really really bad a math... which would explain a whole lot MORE, actually...

As far as I'm concerned, if they're going to run with the "JJ-verse," I hope that they abandon all pretense of it being related to Star Trek as it's always existed.
A full reboot would've sorted all that out and been all the better for it.

I think far too many people are getting emotional over trivial details, here and on other forums.

All this "it's not really Star Trek" nonsense is pretty weak to say the least.

Especially the New Coke comments. New Coke failed to sell well, therefore any comparison between this film and New Coke is quite illogical as this film has clearly greatly exceeded it's predecessors. For this to be New Coke, it would have to have failed.

Bottom line, like it or not, this was the story of James T Kirk, Leonard McCoy, Montogomery Scott, Pavel Chekov, Hikaru Sulu, Nyota Uhura and so on.

And with one exception which I'll come back to, each and everyone was EXACTLY in keeping with their original characters in every way.

Chekov on the other hand, was radically different and to be honest, I liked him better like this.

Actually, no, Kirk was wildly different. He was NOT the Kirk from TOS.. he's the Kirk the people who never watched the show thought he was, with extra teenaged EMO ANGST! Seriously, he's a Gundam Seed character!

Except, option B has given us threads like this. Now that we know it's an alternate reality, why should we care for these guys any more than beardy Spock?

There's no "should" involved - one either does or one doesn't, based on one's response to the movie. You clearly aren't "emotionally invested," to use the phrase that's going around. OTOH, I am - I liked these versions of the characters, I liked the movie, and I want to see more with these guys. They're Kirk and Spock and McCoy and so on in the same way - to me - that both David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston were...well, you know.

BTW, Eccleston is my favorite Doctor - but I've grown so fond of Tennant that it'll be hard to give him up for this youngster. ;)

Oh come now, the best Doctor was Rowan Aktinson.

(Actually, he WAS pretty good...)

Spock: I've gone back in time even farther and paid off the arhitects of your mining ship to put a trap door right under you!

Nero: NOOOOO!

Hardly. Of course teenaged ermo angst is exactly what I would expect from someone only parroting the ridiculous 90210 nonsense that the disenfranchised have tried to push since day one.

And as someone who HAS watched the original, and seen all of them multiples of times, I can say with all certainty that Pine was absolutely the James T. Kirk that we could have expected based on what we know of Shatner's Kirk in every way.

He quite clearly shows us the Kirk who we knew to disregard orders at the drop of a hat, blow up weapons facilities without thought to consequence, and who caused computers to blow themselves up, and followed what he thought was the right way to do something and to hell with everyone else.

I'll even do something I don't do, I'll come right out and say you are wrong, but you are entitled to your opinion, no matter how misguided :)

You name me one time in the original series where "Kirk Disobeyed Orders at the drop of a hat", and I'll cede to you. Just once. (I'll even keep the hat dropping as figurative, to make it more fair!)

At the drop of a hat, not sure. But:

- Going to Talos IV (Menagerie)
- Taking Spock to Vulcan (Amok Time)
- Going to the Genesis Planet (ST III)

Not Kirk. That was Spock. (Bad T'Bonz! BAD!)
- Taking Spock to Vulcan (Amok Time)
Not a 'drop of the hat', he risked his career, and spent two scenes on that choice.
- Going to the Genesis Planet (ST III)[/QUOTE]
Knew he was ending his career to do it, and even THEN he went back to 'face the music', and would have to.. if it weren't for the martial aid from hell!
