Weekend Estimate - Star Trek #7 - $4.7 million

$1.9 Million this weekend from overseas - $122.2 Million total.

So thats $239,444,000 + $122,200,000 = $361,644,000

Transformers 2 is off to a big start already...

Playing in only two key foreign markets, Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" from director Michael Bay nonetheless premiered at No. 1 on the international circuit during the weekend, rolling up $20 million from 846 locations.

The sci-fi action sequel to "Transformers," Bay's 2007 smash that grossed $389 million overseas, opened at No. 1 in the U.K. ($14.1 million from 517 screens) and Japan ($5.8 million from 329 sites).

The explosive saga of shape-shifting robots, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, outperformed the original's opening weekends by 71% in the U.K. and 13% in Japan, according to Paramount. "Revenge" is set to open worldwide Wednesday.

Saw Trek for a second time today. Was at the beach, it was shitty weather and raining, so saw it with friends. The theater was about half full for a 3pm Sunday matinee. Surprised me how many people were there!

My friends thought it was a good movies and they aren't scifi people.

I noticed a surprising amount of people seeing Star Trek at my AMC today. We still have two theaters for it (coming to 10 showings a day) and when I got to work on of the first shows I needed to clean was Trek and it was near sold out! The next few showings appeared to be close to selling out as well.

As for how much longer it'll be around. I think it also depends on how many screens a theater has. Mine has 30 so its going to be around for several more weeks. For theaters that have less, it probably wont be along much longer. At this point though I think its going to outlive Angels and Demons and Terminator.

Does it even have to?

If you want asses in the seats you do...esp if word of mouth isn't favorable. It could also point to a lack of confidence on the part of the studio heads.

Bay's not thrilled about Paramount's promotion of the film, either:

Michael Bay is one of the worst directors in Hollywood and is my prime example when I explain to people what is wrong with modern cinema.

Michael Bay apparently won't be making a third Transformers film... I read an article that mentioned the leaked memo in the piece Dennis posted, and he says that he wants to try doing something "totally divergent, something without any explosions." Good luck Michael. It's nice to see him wanting to branch outside his comfort zone, but I'm not exactly optimistic about the prospects.

As for Trek, even though it's just gravy at this point, it's still nice to see the film continuing to perform solidly after a month and a half of being in theatres. Regrettably, I contributed not to Trek this weekend, but to The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (it was my dad's choice -- it was Father's Day after all, and since we've each already seen ST twice, he wanted to see something else). But, as I've stated before, it's good to know that this film doesn't actually need the repeated patronage of fans like me to be a success. :)

Michael Bay will end up directing Transformers 3. The main issue he has with it is that if they want him to do it by 2011, he basically won't have a break. If they push it back to 2012 or something, like he wants, he could fit something in before.

Well, that's just an example of losing all sense of proportion. A lot of factors make the commercial film marketplace what it is right now, and Bay is not particularly significant. He's just one director, not terribly influential, who gives the studios and public what they want most of the time. And "one of the worst?" Not even close - but since his stuff's successful so often he's a lot easier to point to in a conversation, I suppose.

The numbers have been great -- thanks for reporting them. I'm still counting the day until the DVD comes out!

I agree..and I hope JJ convinces Paramount to not 'nick' us with just the movie cut, and then six months later, the 'undeleted' scenes versions. Since have cracked the 12 barrier, stilling gunning for you Jeri, I want to see the scenes they keep talking about that ended up on the cutting floor...

7. STAR TREK - 4.70 million - 239.4 million

If this number holds up, it would be a tiny 14% drop from last weekend.

Awesome. I've been one of the crowd proclaiming Trek will make it to $250M for a while now, and I was only guessing about $3.5M for the weekend. Great news.

How many minutes total were excised from the film? I thought it was like 10 or so.

And 12?

Them's not even fighting words to Jeri, who's probably stifling a big yawn.
