We could've had the First Asian Female Captain, but no....

Kamen Rider Blade

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Michelle Yeoh would've made a perfect first Asian Female Captain and First Asian Captain to be a primary character.

But noooo, they had to focus the story on a 1st Officer who caused a war.

-_-

Still disappointed that I didn't get Michelle Yeoh every week as Captain.

=:::(

Would you have preferred the first female Asian Captain to be a primary character start the war?
I would've preferred that she not died and that there would be 2x Protagonists moving the story along.

Michael Burnham & Phillipa Georgiou.

Both going about the universe solving problems in their own ways.

Discovery is a heavy show and Phillipa Georgiou has a convivial tone that wouldn't suit it. The first half of The Vulcan Hello feels like a different Trek series. They had to kill off the character to give Mike Burns the dark ride she needs to make the show entertaining.

To the OP's first point - you aren't wrong and I hear your sentiment loud and clear about the captain thing but I don't see any reason that Discovery is going to continue without Michelle Yeoh at all. For all we know, she's in most of season 2 and they plan to use her throughout the series.

Well you got a kick-ass deuteragonist instead
Amen!

Agree with OP but I like where the story is going now... best case I could see an animated spin off about the Shenzhou's early days - the seven years with Mike Burns as XO - with all the actors doing their respective voice roles. It would be suitably lighter fare and thus more suitable in tone for Phillipa Georgiou as captain.

Georgiou from "Drastic Measures" could have handled it. In any case, I think the show handled it well. It was clear she was an excellent captain, a real starfleet type, which made her loss important.

I really wish the show had gone for a sort of split narrative, similar to Lost cutting from the present to the past. So it would start with Burnham on the prisoner transport and flash back to her on the Shenzhou. I'm not sure how far you could go with it, but at least keep it going during the first arc. Maybe include other missions before finally revealing what started the war. It would give more time to develop Georgiou as a character, so seeing her Mirror counterpart would be an even greater emotional impact.

I just wish everyone could stop labelling everything n just appreciate something for what it is for a change, appreciate the stories being told. Not all this “I wish they had an Asian/Black/TransGender/Gay/BiPolar lead” bollox

I see people as people, I don’t count the number of Asian people on screen or think oh wow I’ve only seen 3 white people in this program so far I must complain! I think people who do that have a huge problem. It shouldn’t matter what someone’s skin colour is or their sexual orientation.

It’s not unreasonable for anyone to want to see people like themselves represented on TV in positive life affirming roles, especially minority groups.

But I don’t think it’s fair to demand anything from the production team though, beyond consistency and compelling entertainment.

With Star Trek though, I’d expect to see less diversity in the future as people and cultures mix over the centuries.

Don't get me wrong, I like Captains for their own Acting Performance / Roles given by the writers.

But being Taiwanese-American, Michelle Yeoh is kinda a big deal in my community.

Wanting to see a Asian American lead is kind of a long time dream for Trek.

Sulu didn't get his own Movie / Show when he was Captain, so that kinda sucked that he was always a subordinate.

We got our Canadian American Cowboy Captain in Kirk played by Shattner
Then younger Pretty Boy Kirk with Pine

Then we get our first Commandin French-British Captain with Picard

Then we get our first Black Captain with Sisko (My favorite Captain BTW)

Then we get our our first Female Captain with Janeway

Then we get our first Captain that doesn't have a Shakespearan background with Archer

Why is it so wrong to want a Asian Female Captain when we were SOOO close to having one?

Michelle Yeoh is a fine Actress with lots of critical acclaim to her ability.

From what we've seen, she was pretty good as Prime Phillipa Georgiou.

I think it’s sad that people ‘like’ a program purely based on the fact the lead is Black, Asian, Gay or whatever. We’re all human so none of that should matter at the end of the day, I watch Discovery for its stories, not for which character I ‘relate’ to.
I like the show for what it is, but I do have certain things I want.

Seeing certain types of representation isn't a bad thing necessarily if done correctly.

I assume you're white and straight because representation matters and usually the people saying it shouldn't matter are the ones who get represented literally everywhere, they don't realize the importance because they've never lived without it.

You assume correct but we’re not living in 1960 anymore, there’s representation where ever you look, if you look for it. There’s been ‘Black’ Lead roles since the 80s, there’s been gay on screen relationships since the 90s but yet people still feel the need to ‘look’ for these things.

You would wrongly assume that because I’m a white straight man that I’d imediately dislike Dr Culber, the opposite is in fact true, his character is/was compelling and I was gutted to see him go. I also like Staments, but I shouldn’t, right? Because I’m not gay?

I see everyone as equal and whether I’m both white and straight doesn’t mean I don’t ‘relate’ to non white straight characters/people. I think people try to look for issues where there are none.

Many shows I saw growing up had all black casts. This was during the 90s. We’ve come a long way since then. It’s normal to me to see other races AND women in lead roles but it all seems so new to everyone today.

Yes it’s fantastic that there are more opporunities for actors and actresses from all different backgrounds to get their chance but liking them just for the colour of their skin shouldn’t be a thing, it kind of destroys all of their hard work as an actor.

In the 60s you can understand why Whoopi Goldberg’s parents made her watch TOS, it was LITERALLY the only example of a Black Woman on TV. The same cannot be said today.

Now if you’re talking off screen, I totally agree, when it comes to Governents being 95% white men. That’s where the issue lies. The rule makers, the judges, the people of power are majority white, we can only change that by voting yet thousands and thousands of people each year don’t bother to go to the polling stations.

Captain Georgiou was great. I'm glad the Emperor is around but I'd have preferred a Captain Georgiou led series. Burnham is appalling as the lead character. Anyone would be better than her in all honestly. I hope she dies in Season 2 so the focus can be shifted to the other characters who are more entertaining and better acted.
