We could've had the First Asian Female Captain, but no....

I don’t think anyone here is saying that

That’s what it came across to me like. Because I’m white and straight means I can’t relate to non white gay people apparently...

Anyway back to topic, I do prefer Michael as the lead role, having something other than ‘the captain’s’ point of view is refreshing. (Mirror) Georgiou is better off as a recurring character imo.

Yes, the huge popularity of Michael Burnham is hard to escape, what with fans incessantly quoting their favorite Michael Burnham dialogue like it was something out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Who could forget that time where she... uh...

And that other time when... er....

Still! There was that passionate romance with Clem Fandango which surely anyone who has ever fallen in love before could relate to, what with... uh... I'm sure it'll come to me.

I just wish everyone could stop labelling everything n just appreciate something for what it is for a change, appreciate the stories being told. Not all this “I wish they had an Asian/Black/TransGender/Gay/BiPolar lead” bollox

Whenever I hear a variant on this comment, I want to point out that practically everything we know about storytelling tells us that these things do matter, and that people learn who they are and what they can be through media. I'm reminded particularly of this quote from Harriman and Lucaites. Substitute television for photography and I think you have something true.

"A photograph captures a tiny sliver of time and space yet can reveal in a flash the social order. Photojournalism shows what can be done in public, and it allows one to think that what is not shown cannot be done. Any photo can be an invitation to participate in a way of life and also a vivid reminder that others—you, perhaps—are not welcome, perhaps not even thought possible."

I think you are a long long way from getting the point here

Discovery is a heavy show and Phillipa Georgiou has a convivial tone that wouldn't suit it. The first half of The Vulcan Hello feels like a different Trek series.
Indeed. It felt like the sort of Star Trek series I actually wanted to see!

They had to kill off the character to give Mike Burns the dark ride she needs to make the show entertaining.
Well that obviously didn't work...
To the OP's first point - you aren't wrong and I hear your sentiment loud and clear about the captain thing but I don't see any reason that Discovery is going to continue without Michelle Yeoh at all. For all we know, she's in most of season 2 and they plan to use her throughout the series.
I really don't want to see evil Georgiou. That character was just adding insult to the injury of killing the real Georgiou, who was a proper inspirational Starfleet captain.

She’s not that bad.
Burnham is absolutely fine, I like her and Martin-Green is doing great job. I just didn't like the stupid story they had written for her. I'd have much rather seen her exploring strange new worlds with Georgiou.

I like her too, and I welcome some more traditional stories with her,

Yeah...what's "traditional TV," exactly? "Traditional/non-traditional" are really vague and general descriptors. Is there a channel or a studio where I can be guaranteed of only "non-traditional" programming? This could be important.

I find it funny how every single person who says that is a white straight cis male, someone who has seen themselves represented every single day of their lives. Some of us aren’t so lucky so don’t fucking speak for us.

You have no clue what it is like to never see someone like yourself, you take it for granted. I didn’t see a single positive portrayal of someone like me until I was 30 and I’m 33 now. Before that, it was dead bodies, hookers and the punchline to a cruel joke. Do you know how that affects you? Of course you don’t, you got to see yourself as a hero, brave, handsome, charming, etc. I just got to see myself as a dead body, a hooker or the punchline of a cruel joke. It’s hard to imagine a future with that as your only representation of yourself. Media is how we view the world, it influences how people see themselves and each other. If that’s all you ever get to see as yourself, what could be your hope for anything? It’s not much. In fact that one positive performance may have saved my life. I know you don’t care, you just care about getting more and not seeing anything that makes you uncomfortable (meaning makes you actually think and question yourself). But it matters to me and it matters to everyone else who gets the shaft when it comes to representation.

So yes, “I wish they had an Asian/Black/TransGender/Gay/BiPolar lead”. Because we exist and deserve a chance to be represented. I don’t care if you don’t like it, you’ve had enough and they’ll never stop showing white men in lead roles. We just want to see someone else every now and then, because this might be hard to accept but white men aren’t the only people in the world. In fact you’re outnumbered by everyone else. So suck it up and learn to have empathy for others, the rest of us have had to do for years.

Nobody said or implied that; instead, your first two posts have a big helping of white privelege ('there's only one race, the human race!', 'I don't see colour!') which misses the value of representation in a show like Star Trek. That's what was being pointed out.

White people are seen as the default. It’s why Black Panther gets called a black superhero instead of just superhero like Captain America and Superman. Wonder Woman is a female superhero. Everyone else is always has to be labeled, white men think they’re “the norm” and the rest of us are something else. I feel like we should label everything focusing of another white cishet man should be label “white guy” like Spider-man Homecoming 2 is an upcoming white guy superhero movie. Maybe then people will realize that so many of them and so few of anyone else.

Georgiou as the lead would've been good. For entirely different reasons, I also like Mirror Georgiou.

Either way works in its own way. I never went into this particular series getting attached to anyone. They made it clear with Georgiou, T'Kuvma, and Landry right off the bat, then Culber. Anyone can die. I'm pleasantly surprised Tilly and Tyler survived. After "Lethe", I figured Lorca might not be around forever.

Moral of the story: Don't get attached to anyone except Burnham. But, even then: Orange Is the New Black started with Piper as the main character then it became more of an ensemble and now the entire cast is interesting enough and developed enough that it could get rid of Piper and continue on just fine. She's just another character in a large sea of characters. The same with Discovery. Eventually, it might have enough characters to pick up the slack so that it could move on even without Burnham.

By the way, I'm still waiting for an Iranian Captain as the lead. :p

I've never thought about expecting someone who looks like me as being the lead. I guess because I've seen a female Captain that is somewhat validating. Ages vary. Race is a lost cause when you a mongrel like I am, though colouring wise I see blonde and blue eyes from time to time, though I think less now. I guess I do identity with the female characters though Tuvok is my favourite across Trek and we're pretty opposite.

An Asian/female permanent Captain would work just fine and we've had Georgiou but sometimes I find Michelle's acting a bit wooden.
