Way to make a first impress: New neighbor an ***

Before the glory that is Amazon.com Marketplace came into existence, I used to shop at Half.com (before they went to crap). Nearly everything there was Media mail, and it was all books, CDs, VHS tapes and so on. It would be, say, $3 for the large, hardbound book, and then $1.20 to ship by media mail. I'd get it a week later (although they would warn you that it could take up to 30 days at most) and was generally happy. It worked rather well as long as you were in no hurry. I think they've reduced the 30 days to 18 days now, though. I'm not certain.

Just met the new neighbor...and got accused of stealing her mail.

Apparently someone sent her a videotape and she's not got it yet, so she's been going through my mailbox looking for her mail. And her friend said the tape should be here, so I must have stolen the tape. She actually asked (demanded) to come in the house and search for the tape. I told her no. She says if she has too she'll get a warrant. I just tell her "Have a good holiday" and walked off. Last thing I need is a feud with crazy bitch neighbor.

Yeah, she's going to be a fun one to have around.

She seems rather too concerned about this videotape.

Makes one wonder what might be on it...

If she really has been going through your mailbox, that is a crime. Have a webcam set up to record your mailbox and use it to turn her in if necessary.

Mr Awe

I believe its a felony crime to go through someone else's mailbox. If she even tries to get a warrant and she lets slip that she's been philfering through your mailbox, she's going to get arrested and charged.

Not to worried about a warrant: Know most of the cops, so if she's wanting a "kick in the door, get on the ground" deal she's SOL; they'd probably roll up ask me if I did it without even setting foot in the house, then turn around and start shooting the breeze and asking me for favors for the dept. And the local judge is one of those "Why is this shit in my courtroom, get the fuck out" types. Just a handful of minutes of convo, I got the impression she one of those "make threats, scare people, get what I want" type of people.

^ Agreed. Really makes one wonder when someone is SO distraught over a VHS tape.

Boom-chicka-bow-wow... ;)

OP, that story floors me! I can't imagine someone behaving that way, much less to a person they've only just met and have to live next to for who knows how many years. Sorry about your crazy neighbor. She sounds like a sitcom character!

Yikes. We met one of our neighbors by upgrading our internet/cable bundle and the guy accidentally cutting of their internet, phone, and cable. Ooops! We apologized, offered to pay for whatever they needed, and I brought over cupcakes. We're friends now, and she signs for our delivery packages when we're out. :)

Who the fuck would steal a video tape? That's worth what, .75?

I would've just said "I don't own a VCR, as it is not 1992".

Some people are just wired oddly, I suppose. There are plenty of folks I don't like in the Valley, but for the most part I get along with them cause there's no need for stupid drama.

Boy did she move into the wrong area then. Our post office is infamous for stuff going missing-- especially this time of year.

She already admitted to going through your mail. Have her arrested. With an attitude like that, she won't last long in jail. (I mean the holding cell until she's released 4 hours later.)

Going through someone's mail is dealt with via the Postal System, not the local police. Word to the wise: Don't fuck with the Post Office.

Clearly she doesn't know how our legal system works.

I'd report it to the local postmaster before she starts stealing your mail. Who knows what the hell she's already stolen out of there.

Called the Post Master this morning. He said at the moment they can't do anything cause it's her word against mine an vice versa, but he's going to notify the carrier to keep an eye on the woman. He also said that he might get back to me about some options once he's had a chance to check some things out.

Not much, but he said that since I called and opened a file if something goes missing out of my box it's her [the neighbor] ass.

^ Options? I wasn't aware options were required when somebody makes utterly baseless accusations without a shred of proof.

You didn't steal it and there is no reason to think you did, therefore she will never be able to prove that you stole it. Besides telling her to shut up and shove off, I can't see what other recourse there might be.

He's notified the Postmaster, which is a step in the right direction. Now, the idea is to give crazy VHS woman rope to hang herself. This is a given when she's making baseless accusations of theft followed up with how she's "going to get a warrant" I'm sorry, but that business about a warrant makes me laugh. She's all bark and dumber than a tree stump.

Patience. Now comes the watching and waiting.
